    Redskins | Ramsey Shaken Up
    Sun, 11 Sep 2005 10:55:44 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Patrick Ramsey (head) was hit hard while being sacked during the second quarter of today's game. He hit his head hard on the ground. He is currently being looked at by the team's training staff. Backup QB Mark Brunell is warming up.

yeah give or take on that one, it could've been either or both. They'll be in to Campbell within a couple games, and then they'll start back over.

Brunell Will Start for Redskins Against Cowboys

    By Nunyo Demasio

Coach Joe Gibbs has benched Patrick Ramsey, naming Mark Brunell the starting quarterback for the Washington Redskins' game Monday night against the Cowboys in Dallas. After informing Ramsey of the move, Gibbs announced it this afternoon at his weekly day-after-the-game press conference at Redskins Park.

"I made the decision that we're going to start Mark," Gibbs said, "and I know this is something that I'm saying to every fan out there and every person that thinks the world of the Redskins and pulls for them.

"I know a lot of people will disagree with this, and I understand that. For me personally, I felt like it was a decision I had to make. I think we've got a situation where two quarterbacks there can go in and win ballgames for us. I just felt like at this point, the best decision for us and for the Redskins was to start Mark."

Gibbs informed Brunell of the switch in a telephone conversation this afternoon after the quarterback had left Redskins Park. Ramsey could not immediately be reached for comment. "This is something Patrick doesn't agree with. He's a very competitive guy. I understand that. But it's something we're going to have to work through."

Although the move is a constant topic of speculation where the Redskins are concerned, it became more likely when Ramsey was knocked out of Sunday's 9-7 season-opening victory over the Chicago Bears.

Ramsey's strained his neck in the second quarter when linebacker Lance Briggs blitzed from the left side on third and goal from Chicago's 16-yard line. Briggs appeared to wrap his right arm around the base of Ramsey's neck before slamming him to the ground.

During Chicago's ensuing drive, Ramsey tossed balls with Brunell on the sidelines. He was cleared to play in the third quarter, but Gibbs kept him out and cited precaution as part of the reason.

Neither quarterback was able to lift an offense that has been revamped since finishing ranked 30th in the NFL last season. The offense generated 323 yards overall including 164 rushing yards (Clinton Portis collected 121 on 21 carries). But Washington's offense committed three turnovers to kill promising drives while struggling in the red zone.

Although Ramsey was declared the starter late last season, an unofficial quarterback competition appeared to occur during training camp this year.

Ramsey's performance was uneven -- with two touchdowns vs. four interceptions for a 65.6 passer rating -- while Brunell sparkled (zero turnovers and an 85.8 rating) albeit mostly against reserves. During preseason, Brunell actually attempted more passes (56 for a 58.6 accuracy) than Ramsey (51 for 58.8 accuracy). Ramsey's best quality was completing deep passes -- the offense's bane last year, causing Gibbs to make it a point of emphasis this year. But Ramsey committed too many turnovers for Gibbs's liking.

Sunday, Ramsey completed six of 11 passes for 105 yards and a 49.4 rating. Brunell led the Redskins on three scoring drives, although each culminated in Hall field goals. Brunell was eight for 14 for 70 yards and a 70.5 rating.

"This is something that's extremely hard," Gibbs said today. "You don't like doing this. . . . Certainly this wasn't a plan I had going in, but sometimes plans change. And I think you do the best you can in dealing with it."

I certainly wouldn't trust Gibbs to back me if I were him. He's definitely done here.

    Play the under.

he wanted a trade before, but washington promised him a fair chance...which he obviously didn't get. I'm sure the browns or some other shit team could use him. But benching a player like this is cowher style...
