Underworld: Evolution

    Underworld 2 In The Works

Kate Beckinsale, who will reprise the role of the vampire Selene in the upcoming sequel to Underworld, told SCI FI Wire that her real-life fiance, director Len Wiseman, is currently writing the script, but keeping it a big secret. "It's under lock and key at the moment, but I know that they're definitely talking about it," Beckinsale said in an interview while promoting her next movie, Van Helsing. "There's lots of furtive reading of scripts in the bathroom. So I think they're writing it, but I think they don't want to get me involved in case I freak out about something."

A dark, stylish Romeo and Juliet story with vampires and werewolves locked in a centuries-old war, Underworld was directed and co-written by Wiseman. Wiseman, who made music videos prior to becoming a feature-film director, will co-write and direct the second film as well.

Beckinsale will again play Selene, an assassin (or "death-dealer") charged by her fellow vampires with hunting down and killing the bloodsuckers' mortal enemies, werewolves (or Lycans). Beckinsale's Underworld co-star, Scott Speedman, has also already signed on to reprise his role in the next movie.

     Underworld 2 Gears Up

Tom Rosenberg, producer of the upcoming sequel to 2003's vampire-werewolf movie Underworld, told SCI FI Wire that the follow-up will pick up where the original movie left off. "I think the real intense followers of the whole saga will really love the second one," Rosenberg said in an interview. "It's very intricate. It gives Selene's [Kate Beckinsale] history, Viktor's [Bill Nighy] history, and then of course now Marcus is going to come out of the crypt. So it's really cool. I'm excited about it."

Rosenberg added that the sequel, which doesn't yet have a firm title, is set to begin shooting in November. "We may call it something else," Rosenberg said. "We'll probably call it something with Underworld, but right now it's Underworld 2."

Rosenberg added that Underworld director Len Wiseman wants to be careful not to obscure what made the first film appealing. "It's much bigger action, but we have to keep the coolness of it and not let the action overwhelm it," Rosenberg said. "I like the whole world that's created, and you have to stay within that world. I don't want to jam mindless nonstop action at the audience; this is going to still be story-driven. But we're going to have cool sequences and some bigger action. This story is better, more intricate and more interesting. That's what I really like about it." Underworld 2 is due to be released in 2005.

I never have read a good review of that movie but I finally saw it and I liked it. A sequel would be cool. I guess I just loved looking at Kate Beckinsale :mushy:

    Beckinsale Fights For Underworld 2

Kate Beckinsale, who returns in the role of vampire warrior Selene in the upcoming sequel film Underworld: Evolution, told SCI FI Wire that it was much easier for her to prepare for the film, having done the role before. "That really helped," she said in an interview at Comic-Con International in San Diego. "I mean, I was so unviolent the first time around. I really had to change a lot. And I did Van Helsing, which was part of my training, actually, for this film. So we still had a training period, but everybody was much more aware of what our strengths and weaknesses were."

The film will continue to explore the relationship between Selene and Michael (Scott Speedman), a hybrid werewolf-vampire, while the war between the two species continues underground. "We've got a lot more fighting this time," Beckinsale said. "It's easier to just fire a few guns than it is actually choreograph this huge, great big fight sequence. But this time we had a bit more money. We have got a lot more fist fighting and running about and all that."

But Beckinsale, who married director Len Wiseman after meeting him on the first film, said that it wasn't the action sequences that were the most difficult for her in the film. "The sex scene was quite hard actually," she said. "Doing a love scene was hard with my husband there. I had a little trouble." Underworld: Evolution opens Jan. 20, 2006.

    Underworld 2 Is Evolved

Len Wiseman, who directed and co-wrote the vampires-versus-werewolves film Underworld in 2003, told SCI FI Wire that he only agreed to do the upcoming sequel on the condition that it bear as little resemblance to the original as possible. "The fact that I wasn't doing it all over again is what excited me," Wiseman said in an interview. "I sat down with the studio and said, 'Look, I'd love to do Underworld 2 if it's a completely different movie. And I want a whole different tapestry and environment.' And I had no interest whatsoever to just do the first movie over again with different effects and different settings and all that. And I was able to do that, and they were really behind me in going a lot of different directions than maybe they even felt comfortable with, but I wanted to make such a different type of film. That's what interested me."

One of the most noticeable differences will be in the designs of the creatures, and the werewolves in particular, which will appear in flashback sequences looking more wolf-like and feral than before. Wiseman, who made his directing debut on the first film, said he relished the chance to go back and do things better a second time. "It's great to actually revisit, because of course there's things that you discover that work better or things that didn't work [and] you want to improve on them," he said. "Right down to the creatures we had, some things that you'll notice, some things that you won't. Some of the things that you won't notice were a huge help for me just in terms of the technology involved."

Underworld: Evolution once again stars Scott Speedman and Kate Beckinsale (who met Wiseman on the first film and married him last year). In a separate interview, Beckinsale told SCI FI Wire that she worked with Wiseman to make her character—the vampire warrior Selene—more emotionally evolved as well. "Len and I both felt that she was very repressed in the first one and we wanted to open her up, to [be] just a tiny bit more human," she said. "I mean, it's not like gags and all that stuff, but just to have a little lightness, a little bit more fun with it this time. But in terms of her relationship with Michael [played by Speedman], that's kind of opened her up a bit as well." Underworld: Evolution opens Jan. 20, 2006. [IMG]

I liked the movie. Can't say I loved it. There were some cool action scenes that were great. I like the plot as well. I can say I will be looking forward to the sequel.

    [IMG][IMG][IMG]Evolution Is Sequel And Prequel

Len Wiseman, who directed the upcoming sequel film Underworld: Evolution, told SCI FI Wire that he wanted to explore the character's pasts as well as their present. "Whether the characters have died in the first film or not, there's a lot of stuff that's still being discovered and uncovered about them that's in this film that we always knew we were going to do in the first one," Wiseman said in an interview on the set in Vancouver, B.C., last January. "And there's aspects of this one that carry over."

Underworld: Evolution continues where Underworld left off, with Kate Beckinsale and Scott Speedman returning to their roles as the vampire Selene and vampire-werewolf hybrid Michael Corvin. It will also look back at the origins of the conflict, through both historical flashbacks and genetic memories, each having a distinctive visual design.

"I didn't want to do the same film over again," Wiseman said. "There's genetic memories in this film that will have the look of the ones in the first film. And then there's other flashbacks, when we go into the medieval era and all that. There's a whole different design for that as well."

Wiseman said that one of the biggest differences in making the sequel has been a concern about meeting the expectations of fans, something he didn't have to worry about on the original. "People know about the franchise now," he said. "Before, it was just any decision that you had on the way certain things should go, or the way the characters should play out. There's a lot of anticipation now that there wasn't before. ... There's pressure on to satisfy what the fans are looking for." Underworld: Evolution opens Jan. 20, 2006. [IMG]
