    Hell there's so many different stories about our name even I can't keep them straight. I know HP will know the right answer. I don't think it has anything to do with a road number though.

    The real reason has to do with the legislative fight to keep the school when it was scheduled to be closed down after WWII. It's a reference to the spirit of that group which Bonnie Cone led back in 1949. Hence, 49ers.

    The road, the gold rush, etc are all coincidences. So is the # of sponsors on the bill that made the college a university - 49.
