Period. Even the X-box 360 (which is probably the dumbest name I've ever heard) cant compete with this. If you have any doubt download the Killzone 2 trailer. Fuckin amazing.

If the PS3 does have of what its supposed to do, it will be great. But unfortunatley right now alot of the ps3 info out there is purley speculation. It won't even be out until Nov. 06. It should be shown at E3 this year though. I think the same thing that happened with ps2 and xbox a few years back is what will happen this time just opposite. Ps3 will be stronger but will not have as many games as xbox. the year difference will affect it. jmo

okay, so i watched the killzone trailer. if that's actual gameplay, then that's pretty amazing. but i VERY MUCH DOUBT that it's actual gameplay. that might be what they HOPE gameplay will look like, but there's no chance that will end up in a $250 console in the next year.

Uh Homer, E3 is going on right now. And how do you figure the PS3 wont have more games than the X-Box 360? What exactly do you base that on? After all, the PS2 dominated the war between the X-Box and PS2.

Heh, a year difference will effect it? Can anyone say "Dreamcast"?

Super, its not gameplay but its realtime movies running off the hardware (I believe).

BTW, I'm just waiting for X-Boxes fall in price so I can pick one up.

credibility was just shot out the window right there. i mean, you call xbox360 stupid, but playstation 3, well, that just super fucking creative right there.

Well my thing is that a 360 is a perfect revolution..so they are pretty much saying its just the X-Box all over again. They should of called it the 180 or something.

Personally I think it should of been left X-Box Next.

i seriously doubt it. it might be what they think it will sort of look like, but the gpu is an nvidia chip. looking at the xbox as a case-study of where the custom nvidia chip was when the xbox came out vs what the standard video card from nvidia was doing, i think you can say that the likely throughput of the ps3's gpu will probably be about what the top-end card right now is, plus maybe a little zing in one way or another (like increased fill rate for 1080p support, for example). at best, it'll maybe be twice what a 6800 can pull.

however, it's still only got 256mb of video ram so it'll be limited in how many textures it can have loaded at one time. that sequence had a ton of textures. i'm guessing a lot more than 256mb worth. maybe they get around this with a fast bus, but the system istelf has only another 256mb of ram. that goes real quick when you start loading it with graphics.

edit: if it WAS actual in-game engine, they would let you know it. that's way too impressive to forget to tell people. since they don't hype it, i'm thinking it's not.

    Explain what all this means:

    Processor 3.2GHz Cell w/ 7 SPEs
    2.0 TFLOPS

    Memory 256MB XDR @ 3.2GHz
    256MB GDDR3 @ 700MHz

    GPU 550MHz NVIDIA

Also theres something special about that "cell" processor IBM, Toshiba, and Sony built. Its what is supposed to make the PS3 a step above everything else.

this whole "cell" thing sounds like some gimmicky marketing shit. it's basically a sorta-semi multi-processing system. the "SPEs" are "synergistic processing engines". i'm thinking, tho i could be wrong, that they probably operate in parallel so it's not like you can really consider each to be a legit processor on it's own. and in truth, the cpu is really not the thing you need to consider for a console system. all the cpu is going to be good for is physics simulations and handling large databases of enemies. large databases won't mean much on a console (nobody's gonna play an RTS on a ps3) but the physics stuff could be nice. still, if sony's gonna spend $300 to make a ps3, $250 of it should be in the gpu. and that 7 SPEs is really 8 with set aside for redundancy or something. that seems kinda strange if they really can be considered to be additive (2 spes = 2 x the performance, 5 spes = 5 x the performance). why just drop 12.5% of your performance? i suspect 8 spes is only marginally better than 7 (and perhaps even a drain under the right circumstances).

the ultra fast memory is probably shared memory with the graphics hardware (and thus the need for such amazing speed). this can be nice for certain special fx where the gpu and cpu both interact on data sets (like water simulations). the rest of the memory is also pretty fast, but nothing earth shattering.

the gpu is supposed to be twice as good as "the top end graphics cards". that's probably sorta accurate. i figure nvidia probably considers their 6800 to be the top end graphics card, so that's probably what they're saying -- twice as good as a 6800. check out the unreal3 engine movies to see what the 6800 is capable of. it's nice. twice that is even nicer. but i doubt it'll be that much better than ati's card in the xbox 360 (tho it will indeed probably be better).

the compatibility issue will be big for folks, tho. it's unclear how compatible the xbox 360 will be with older games. if they're smart, they'll autopatch over live if you own the game. okay, smart and not greedy. ps3 is natively ps2 and ps1 compatible. that's a bonus.
