Just read he's got lung cancer.

    WFNZ's Celania undergoes cancer surgery

Co-host of popular morning talk show

    MARK WASHBURN

    TV/Radio Writer

Sports radio personality Jim Celania underwent a 90-minute operation Monday for lung cancer and is recovering at Charlotte's Presbyterian Hospital.

"The surgeon said it went better than expected," said D.J. Stout, operations manager of WFNZ AM (610, 1660).

"They took some lymph nodes out to test and we won't know the results for a few days. They didn't see any signs it had spread," Stout said.

Celania, 55, a smoker, was diagnosed with lung cancer Friday after a heart scan during a routine physical revealed a spot on his lungs about the size of a nickel. Celania and co-host Gary Williams do "The Morning Sports Page" on WFNZ. Celania joined the station in 1997. He is expected to be hospitalized for up to five days. A couple of years ago, I bumped into him at the FNZ WHINER ROAST at Hooters-South Blvd. . . . I told him I won one of the first TRIVIA CONTEST games he use to do on the air at NEWS 36 'back in the day' (i.e. first year I was at UNCC back in 1988 . . This was when WCNC's Studios were located out on Hood Road off of Plaza Road Ext.). I won a cheesy T-Shirt which had him and Hannah Storm (now of CBS 'THE EARLY SHOW) proclaiming their sports dept. as the Ultimate Sports Machine. He was surprised that I still had one and asked if he could have it and I said sure (I ended up meeting him at Jacks and had a few beers with him). He is one cool cat  !!!!!!!!! Hurry back soon Jimmy   !!!!

PS: If you ever catch an old NFL FILMS on ESPN/ESPN2/ESPN CLASSIC/NFL NETWORK on the 1980 Oakland Radiers, I think at one point of the film there is a sportscaster interviewing then QB Jim Plunkett at training camp . . If you look closely, that is 'Old Silky' himself back in the day interviewing him (for KTVU-TV2 I think).
