they ought to do the wise thing and deemphasize football and relagate it to club status. I mean sheesh sapping the vitality of a great institution like UNC to keep a few yahoo's happy is dumb, it's time to move along and get on with the business of molding the leaders of tomorrow. Mooning over a busted sports team and throwing good money after bad is just such waste. I mean hell if it weren't for the sports flacks who would really care?

Who the fuck are you, the President of Vanderbilt? Say that too loudly around some alumni and you will get shot if it's an SEC school.

    kshead,

i think you've got it all wrong.

in these days of a more level playing field (scholly reductions and all), i think that it's much easier to build a program. hell, i want better coaching here at florida state. fsu should not have lost to miami, but because they were unprepared (said they didn't plan on it raining the whole game) and called bad plays (said they shouldn't have run three times at the goal line) fsu lost. there are excuses like that every year.

i see teams out there that have less talent but are pulling off big-time wins because thier coaches do a better job of preparing their teams than fsu's staff is doing. they are young and hungry. fsu's staff doesn't seem to be either.

i'm sure there are plenty of bright coaching stars out there for unc -- it's not like they don't exist. and you keep coming up with these "exceptions" to your rule -- but i think that just proves that it can be done, that it has been done.

also, i never said that unc should win 10 games a year, just 9. :D mack averaged that over a six-year span. pretty good proof that it's possible.

I agree with you that it's easier to go from 3 wins to 6. I am simply going to repeat - again - that only a handful of programs can make the leap that you want to make. Y'know, the one where a team like UNC consistently wins 9 games like you think they should be able to do. It's not going to happen. History says otherwise. I'll take history over your opinion. I'm also willing to stake money on it at this point instead of arguing with you over and over about it.

I'll be back with an offer shortly.

Here's my offer to Larry and anyone else that wants to take a shot.

Remember that cream of the crop I was talking about? Ok. Let's take the better teams from the 5 remaining BCS conferences.

Here's my list: UGA, Florida, Tenn, Auburn, LSU, Texas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Kansas State, Miami, FSU, Va Tech, Ohio State, Michigan, USC, Oregon. That's 16 teams. I'm not even sure who to take in the Pac-10 and Big 10 past the two teams I took from those two teams I took from each of those. Maybe UCLA instead of Oregon. Hell, I'm not that sure. Another team from the Big 10?

Larry said - what - 9 wins? Most teams play 12 games now so 9 wins would be 75%. 8 wins would be 66%. So let's make it 70% of their regular season games. That would be 8.4 games a year in 12 game seasons. Around 42 games total in the regular season over a 5 year span.

Now, I'll give anyone the rest of the teams from those 5 conferences. All of them. That's what? 42 teams? You can have all of them. The team has to win 70% of their regular season games over the next 5 years. Yeah it's a long time, but I can wait. Maybe one team will actually do it (probably because they are lucky enough to find another Mack Brown) so lets make it two teams and I'll give you 2-1. I'll even let you hire Jesus as your coach if you want. It's the only way you'll win this bet.

So c'mon folks. Step right up....we can tweak the terms a bit if you want.

Hey the numbers speak for themselves, fifty gazillion dollars over the last 5 years to what? Sorta beat ECU? Hell they could do that with walkons and handme down equipment. Hell they could take that money and buy everyone inthe state season tickets to the panthers and they see almost NFL caliber play. Let get some bang for the buck here.

so you admit that those coaches are out there and that they can make that much of a difference in a program?
