Serious question, what does an owner gain from hosting a super bowl? They get a cut of the ticket sales?

 

I'm not sure about the team owner, but the city businesses and vendors can make a tidy profit. If restaurants and cafes are doing a good brisk business with their jacked up prices then that means more tips for the help. A $8 beer can cost 12-15 in a superbowl plastic cup at the stadium. Then if the players do get a nice check from making it to the superbowl do the owners of said teams not get a slice of that pie?
I don't even know how they slice up the TV revenue.

 

You use it as leverage to get a free/highly discounted stadium from the taxpayer.

Hosting the super bowl is the "bonus" you throw to local pols/businesses. Though it's hard to prove conclusively that it ever pays back what you're putting in.

Problem is I don't think Carolina would ever join the regular rotation so you're trading hundreds of millions for maybe 3 super bowls over the lifetime of the stadium (~30 years) and some NCAA tourneys.

 

All the revenue* goes in a pot- they split it 52/48 favoring the owners. The 48 is mostly split among the 32 teams to determine the salary cap- rest goes to pensions/insurance/playing bonus**


*all television deals, ticket sales, concessions, league sponsorships, local media deals and yes, even gambling revenues are included as part of our share of revenue. per NFLPA

**if some undrafted RB for example becomes a starter they get a bonus for playing above expected snaps based on some formula.
