I swear, if Homer hires Caldwell or some other ridiculous candidate, I’ll be done with this shit show.

 

Johnson probably met Tepper and said, I can't work for this man.

 

Johnson is saying that they are building something in Detroit. Could be true. They have taken a QB that was a throwaway and made them into a potential playoff team. Now, they get 2 1st round draft picks and might get even better in the next year or so.

Or, he might have heard that Tepper is going to go with Payton and just decided not to muddy the waters with the Lions.

 

The only 'hot' name is Payton and since he requires draft compensation and knows the head coach life he can be picky. Tepper can't/won't get him onboard by upping the money.

Also theres a lot behind the scenes and nfl coaches gossip worse than middle schoolers- There was probably a lot more meddling/stupidity* from ownership.


*The pile on during Rhules firing included him wanting to change the culture-getting rid of keep pounding- i suspect that could have been a tepper mandate as he doesn't seem to ever want to honor the final richardson years since he's taken over. Wilks is probably too wedded to the old guard traditions to ever get the job.

 

So this

 

Tepper's incoherent vision for the franchise and overall incompetence as an owner is probably scaring candidates off.
