I feel bad for you guys. My wonderful dad coached mine and my brother's football and baseball teams for more than a decade and a half between both of us. It's one of the reasons I do/did the same for my kids.

On Sundays as a kid we might watch one of the games on Sunday (Sat was our real games) and those were on a 19in black and white TV as well. Only got three channels then as well. Especially when there was a Rams game on as my dad was a good friend of Roman Gabriel at NCSU.

I did get to go to Univ of Richmond live football games for about 15 years when we weren't playing on Saturdays and when in HS on fridays because we always had season tix because my mom worked there. Also basketball games as well for the same.

I was always lucky in that regard. I miss my pops.

A good dad means a lot to a family.
My dad never made it pass the 4th grade.

Most folks don't realize that is the real privilege in this country. By that standard, we were very privileged and so are my kids. Neither of my granddads made it past the 4th grade, but they were great fathers no matter how poor they were as share croppers and working for the ccc's in the early 20th century. My white granddad had it the same as my injun/black granddad back then. There was no difference in the lifestyle or 'culture' between the two. And their biggest priority was to give their kids a better opportunity that they had, and were successful in that, and it has been down the line with the same priorities with the rest of us.

My wife and her sisters didn't either, until our kids payed football/marching band in college. Now we can't keep them from the games.
