I'm cautiously optimistic that he will be smarter. It has happened before...Belichick 2.0, Carroll 2.0.

A frog usually doesn't turn into a prince. I'm hoping he simply minds the shop for five and then leaves. If this becomes a permanent appointment, it's very bad news for Panther fans.

Also, the notion that Hurney will be a better GM after five years away from football is just insane. I'd feel slightly better about this if Marty was still doing consulting work or some peripheral front office assistance, but he admitted today that this came out of nowhere.

You're getting a rusty Marty Hurney. Just think about that.

Plus those two individuals had extensive track records of success prior to their supposed "rebirths".

Do we need the Brady of GMs this year or do we just need the Dilfer of GMs at this particular time?

For five months, we just someone who isn't going to set the house on fire. The regular season is not an important time for GMs. All of the important work has been done over the spring and summer. There's still no good reason why that person should be Marty Hurney, though. If a captain steers you into an iceberg, you don't let him back on the deck.

The fact that there wasn't a designated second in command is also a pretty bad reflection on the franchise. I assumed it was Gregory but apparently not. That means JR was just going to wing it if something ever happened to Gettleman or if Gettleman quit on his own. That's dysfunctional.

If the owner of the ship said to go out and hit the iceberg. Then that normally cuts down on the captain`s options.
