And he would have collected the full 14 million for only six games? If he held out for the first ten?

pretty sure it's pro rated over each of the game weeks: signing the franchise tag doesn't come with a novelty sized check. a player can still be suspended after signing the tag and lose pay

I didn't know what the procedure was for unsigned franchise players during the season. I know guys lose money during holdouts but technically he wouldn't be holding out. If he could wait to the 11th hour to get paid 14 million dollars I'd understand the decision to rescind.

I think Norman had some very good moments last season and played overall solid during most all the season, and like many great corners, had a play or two get past him. I like his play, his feel for the game, tempo and keeping his eyes on both on who he's covering and the QB. I wonder had QB's actually thrown more his way, would he have looked all that. He is good at man. He just above average in zone, which is what we play mostly. Looking past his batshit/man craziness and goofy mouthyness, I was looking forward to seeing him play this year, fully expecting him to under-perform franchise pay, but solid nonetheless, considering his rep lends to less balls to his side.

Gman is right on this one. The front D 7 are the biggest asset to coverage and tend to make average corners to look better than they are. In the SB, their coverage didn't get us, their rush did.

Norman ain't worth 14 mil per year for one year, or even close to that for long term either.

This moove looks just like something the patriots would do. Except the jury's still out on what the replacement looks like. At least we did sign a nickel. And unfortunately, the winkster's not a #1. I'm still unsure how good we are at development.

On top of all that, the gman doesn't like added distractions. We tend to accumulate them unnecessarily as it is.

So Collin, did you actually enjoy the SB? Don't be holding back, man. It's been months and most of us haven't gotten over it yet.

Ugh. This thread depresses me because it seems like in my absence many of you devolved into Huddle posters. Let me absolutely clear: there is no defense of this move. It is completely idiotic. Not signing Norman to a $14+ million a year deal is fine if you don't think he's worth that, but there's no rational reason not to have him play under the franchise tag. Norman had even said that he was willing to play this season under the tag, he just wasn't going to sign the tag now and have to go through OTAs. Almost no franchised players sign their tags by this point. Almost all of them wait until training camp and sign it then precisely to avoid OTAs and other things that players wish they could avoid. In absolutely no way was Norman being unreasonable.

This was purely an ego thing. Gettleman doesn't want anyone challenging his alpha dog status, so he kicked Norman to the curb unnecessarily, just as he did Steve Smith. Even if this had happened two months ago you could pretend that the extra cap space could have been spent on an offensive tackle or something, but there is no one left to sign. The only worse move in the history of the franchise was the Gilbert signing.

I think Norman is overrated and 14 mil/yr is too much. Franchise, sure, without the bullshit holdout, mouth, etc. If you honestly think this was as bad as any move, then we just disagree. Only I'm not gonna call you an idiot huddle dumbass because we disagree.

I've never been to the huddle, and it's nice to have you back, I guess. We were nothing but a bunch of floundering idiots while you were gone.

I'm liking the gman alpha dog.

I guess the reason I am not pissed about this is because I expected him to be gone after this year anyways. I'm going to miss the crazy fucker though.

Doesn't re-signing Cam Newton destroy your theory about Gettleman wanting to be the biggest ego in the room? Also, I guess it's only fair to point out that you once wanted to trade Cam Newton for Teddy Bridgewater.

If you had said this when he was still a Panther then that would be one thing, but I went back through your posts to check and you had not said anything of the sort. People like you are not intelligent and rational, you're emotional and easily swayed, so when Norman is no longer with the Panthers then suddenly he becomes overrated. You can see exactly the same thing at the Huddle, where posters who were singing Norman's praises three months ago are now insisting that he's no big loss.

It depends on the length of the deal. $14 million annually over the next three seasons would be perfectly fine. $14 million annually over the next five would not. But there's no guarantee that it would have required that much, as Gettleman didn't offer anything even close to that. He was offering Norman less money than Janoris Jenkins just got from the Giants.

You don't call me an idiot because I am clearly not one. My opinions are actually rational and informed while yours are sharted out like rancid tacos. This is not a difference of opinion, this is you being a homer fan trying hard to pretend that something blatantly stupid was somehow acceptable because you, being a mindless drone, are going to support the team blindly no matter what they do. That's not what being a fan is supposed to mean. Gettleman has an out of control ego that has caused him to pick fights with high profile players for three off-seasons in a row. There is absolutely no defense for not having Norman play this season under the franchise tag. None.
