I don't know if unions make for better teachers. Just complacent since they know they can just slide by.

In fairness, I have worked in a state with a teacher's union and another state without. In both circumstances, I have found a common denominator that suggests that teacher's in both states are overwhelmingly good at what they do with an occasional bad apple tossed in the cart.

Why shouldn't teacher's have due process rights in the workplace? Why shouldn't every citizen have due process rights in the workplace? "At will" is a crock of horseshit.

"Slide by?" That's bullshit. In fact, I hope your child never had to attend public school where ALL his/her teacher's did nothing but "slide by."

Agreed. I have educators all in my family tree and it sucks to see how bad nc schools not college) have faired. My daughter is getting her masters in education and plans on teaching. It's 100% beuracracy bullshit that is hurting the teachers

Some are unquestionably sincere and adequate at their jobs, but most public school teachers I've known are the "peaked-in-highschool" type who are trying to hold onto those years instead of teaching kids anything worth a fuck in the real world.

    Very admirable. Respect.

If she wants the aforementioned things that I mentioned (higher salary, excellent retirement and benefits) she should try to teach in a union state. Not sure about SC, but NC teacher's in the first 3-5 years are damn near at the poverty level.

Year one teacher's in California have a base salary of about $45K-$53K. They can earn an additional $10K doing extra duty and teaching summer school. To me, that's a fair wage for a new college graduate going into teaching with approximately 5 years of college (lots more with a Masters).

You didn't coach against Shaq Thompson, though. I'm not letting that go.
