I've seen that said by a lot of people, which is weird because it's completely untrue. I've watched three games of every OBJ route and I'd guess that 85%+ were curls and comebacks, which require no route running ability at all and even then he's not great at throttling down so as not to give the defender time to react. On out routes, OBJ is complete shit in rounding them off. You want your WR to plant and drive on out routes because if you round then it takes you upfield and lets the defender know what you're doing, and if that defender is still in his backpeddle he can drive on that route and pick it off with ease.

It's like how I've seen several people including Todd McShay speak glowingly about Derek Carr's arm strength when absolutely anyone watching even one of his throws would immediately note that Carr floats everything he throws. He has the least velocity of any quarterback I bothered to look at in this class.

Part of me wonders if any of these guys are watching film at all, since they'd have to be complete idiots if sincere or huge dicks if they're trolling the audience. I'm not claiming any kind of expertise here by noting these things. They're something absolutely anyone bothered to watch these players would immediately notice and yet you have high profile people saying the opposite.

I'm pretty sure they're playing golf most of the time. Gabbert was a top ten pick.

    Kelvin Benjamin:
Prone to drops, especially when he thinks he has space to gain yards after the catch (@ FLA 1Q 7:12, @ FLA 4Q 12:39).

Limited speed off the line means defenders don’t need to give a cushion and can challenge short routes (@ FLA 2Q 10:16). Benjamin needs to do a better job of coming back to the pass when the defender is on his hip rather than just trying to wall them off with his body (@ CLEM 2Q 4:02, vs NCSU 2Q 13:04). Much like Mike Evans, Benjamin tries to compensate for his slow build up by grabbing and pulling defenders (@ FLA 2Q 0:33), something that will draw penalties in the NFL.

While he lacks initial quickness and acceleration, Kelvin’s top speed can cause problems for defensive backs who don’t have safety help (vs NCSU 1Q 11:20).

Sometimes brought in motion behind the formation to block the backside defender, much like a move tight end (@ FLA 2Q 8:25). In those situations he does a solid job of squaring his feet and extending his arms.

Tremendous hand strength allows him to pull contested passes away from defenders (@ FLA 2Q 5:00).

Benjamin’s size makes it difficult for defenders to come through and prevent the completion on slants and post patterns (@ FLA 2Q 4:36), but he needs to do a better job of planting and cutting strongly instead of rounding the route (@ FLA 3Q 13:05) lest he give defenders time to undercut it. That size also makes him a load to bring down after the catch, as he can shrug off hits that would bring down smaller receivers (@ CLEM 3Q 14:10). Benjamin also has an effective stiff arm that he uses to deflect tacklers when in open space (vs NCSU 1Q 3:57).

Tracks the ball well through the air on deep routes. His ability to catch over the shoulder means that he can keep his body between the defender and the ball (@ FLA 3Q 7:43, @ FLA 4Q 12:30, @ FLA 4Q 8:12).

Confrontational player who likes to attack opposing corners as a run blocker (@ FLA 4Q 11:23, vs NCSU 2Q 3:11), but he needs to show better technique so that he can control the engagement and sustain it when the play comes to his side.

Height and long arms make him an impressive target physically, but what makes him special is his coordination. Benjamin can leap, twist, and secure the ball with two hands at its highest point in a way that defenders simply can’t contest (@ CLEM 1Q 13:44, @ CLEM 2Q 11:04, vs AUB 4Q 0:17).

Gives away when he’s running shorter routes by not firing off on the snap (@ CLEM 2Q 7:20). He ambles into the route and slowly makes his cut (@ CLEM 3Q 11:13), which alerts defenders as to what he’s doing.

I feel better about him now. I like the attitude. There are a lot of tall dudes with long arms, but the thing you genuinely can't teach is the ability to sky and secure the pass up there. There are a lot of flaws that need ironing out and I'm not counting on him for much in 2014, but I don't feel like he's going to bust.

I do feel better having Proehl coach him. Younger guy that has played in the league recently at a high fucking level vs some 65 yr old geezer. He'll at least have to listen to what Proehl tells him; now whether that sinks in or not who the hell knows.
