''If you get the ball to Steve Smith, something is going to happen,'' Rivera said.

    Well said.

I'm sure that's part of it, but hopefully there's much more to it than that...

Anyway, it begs the question: will Smitty continue the same role he has now thru years 2015/2016 (assuming its with us)? Or will that role be adjusted as his game adjusts to the physical twilight of his career?

Once upon a time I thought Smitty would transition into a helluva slot WR, but he's continuing to play predominantly on the outside. Will this continue as long as he has enough burst/wheels? Or will he be able to continue on despite any regression in his physical skills?

ETA: at least it gives a clear time table for obtaining and/or developing a new #1 receiver...it's been tempting to think about early round WR's the past two years, and it will be even more so were Smitty suffer any more injuries...the yahoo article mentioned that last year was the first time in his career that he had to deal with knee injuries, which is lucky especially considering he broke his neck, lower leg, and arm all playing in football games. Take it from someone who had a bad knee injury early on in his athletic career, knee injuries are the worst.

''This is the most competition I've seen and it's real, legitimate competition,'' Smith said. ''The first day I walked into the receivers' room I could feel the thickness in there. It's kind of this uneasy feeling. You could feel the competition. You could feel the seriousness. No one was loose.''

Popped over to the Observer to see what they had on this. Well...I found a lot of useless information on Cam Newton. But nothing on Smitty other than a Rivera quote form early in OTA's.

Found this useful quote from Steve Reed's Yahoo! article:
''The good thing is the teams that you see making the playoffs, they have a lot of guys that can play,'' Hixon said. ''And believe me, we have a lot of guys that can play, or have shown they can play. That's a good recipe.''

Of the beat guys, I thought Reed was the most solid. He desperately needed a copy editor, but I think he can be forgiven for being a beat man while trying to keep pace with the world according to twitter. He's better in the longer formats.

This article has excellent content, good structure and balance. I appreciate good craft. And since the day he signed with Carolina, I think this is the first actual quote I've seen from Domenik Hixon.
