Dropping armanti wouldn't have bothered me. Getting Gettis back for the whole training camp is almost like signing a free agent. I would have liked Hixon or that other Giant free agent wr on the cheap to push Edwards and probably replace I'm in camp. I still want a DT, a versital offensive lineman, defensive back with the 1st, 2nd and 4th round pick. If someone wants to trade up sometime and get us an extra pick so long as those positions are addressed even better

Steve, LaFell, and Ginn are locked in. You dress probably five or six guys, right? So that leaves two or three spots for Gettis, Armanti, Pilares, and Adams already.

You're missing the point. There are only a certain amount of targets available during the season. If you want a #4 WR to be getting the numbers that Shockey did then that means taking opportunities away from someone else, be it Olsen, Steve, or LaFell.

None of those guys look like quality depth to me. While I understand that it's unreasonable to expect starter quality at WR 6, I'd like someone on the roster that made Ginn depth (I guess he could surprise me, but that's what I think now). Had hopes for Gettis. Had. Of course I could be wrong and would like to be.

(edit: not saying Hixon is that guy, just that I'd like some size, and this is the thread where the WR discussion is happening)

I'm on the case about doing something to upgrade the WR corp now because I'm not wanting to see us spend a high pick on the position this year.

How deep a "depth" are we talking about? The fourth most targeted WR last season was Armanti Edwards with 9 (catching five). Louis Murphy was targeted 60 times, but I would strongly argue that LaFell wasn't targeted enough at only 76. If Ginn is going to be the fourth WR and only get targeted ~10-15 times during the season then I don't understand the point in signing him. Meanwhile it is true that Hixon is a better receiver than Ginn, but his higher catch percentage over Murphy's 60 targets would only mean 3 more successful completions during the season.

Is 3 more completions + cutting a young WR worth whatever it will take to sign Hixon? Not to me. Well, not unless they've already decided to let LaFell walk and intend for Hixon to be the starter opposite Smith in future seasons.

Balls deep depth ;-) If we could push Ginn down to #4 I'd think that would be enough. And I'd prefer a guy who can be a big target.

I don't look at cutting a young WR as a negative at all if the player we bring in is an upgrade. (edit: the cost is another thing. I have a feeling a one year small pay deal was what Gettleman wanted and Hixon wants more years and money)

But is it an upgrade? By going with Hixon over Ginn as the #3 then you're talking about three more completions over the course of an entire season. That's 0.1875 more per game. Armanti actually wasn't a bad receiving option last season as a fourth wideout, while I think people generally want to keep Joe Adams around as well. I guess you could cut Gettis & Pilares to make that work.

I'd be very interested in Hixon if the team hadn't already signed Ginn. I'm also ok with signing Hixon if they feel LaFell will cost too much money to keep beyond this season (or if they stupidly don't want him). But otherwise I'm not seeing the benefit.

I don't see these bench guys enough to really know how much better one is than the other, but if they don't think Hixon isn't an upgrade over Pilares or Adams then why were they talking to him?

Adams, I don't know. Probably wouldn't cost a ton to cut him, we have Ginn to return and others too. Hurney drafted him, Rivera banished him to the pine, what Gettleman thinks of him, I don't know. I am under the impression that he was a project at WR.

You're looking at this in abstract rather than practical terms. In the abstract, of course Hixon is a much better receiver than one of those guys. But this isn't a team looking for a starting wide receiver. This is a team with a limited number of targets and limited cap space. Upgrading the third receiver over Louis Murphy was necessary. Ginn does that, although Hixon would have done it even better. Upgrading a fourth wide receiver is almost meaningless, especially on this team, because that player isn't going to have enough opportunities to make a difference even if they're significantly better than their predecessor.

Let's say you find an amazing price on a Carlo Franco Christmas tie. Your current Christmas tie is Van Heusen, so the upgrade to Carlo Franco is massive. But how often will you actually wear a Christmas-themed tie during the year? Probably not much, so even though it's quite a substantial improvement in the abstract, the practical benefit is minimal.

I get your point, and maybe I am looking at it abstractly. Except Gettleman is bringing these guys in, so it isn't abstract to him, is it? I don't think it would be so abstract if the #1 or #2 go down. #1 isn't getting any younger either.

No doubt we don't have a lot of cash but it seems we have some. Where else might it be spent, of the guys that are out there? Yes we re-signed Dwan but he isn't enough and we're watching the FA DTs go, haven't done squat on the OL unless I'm forgetting something, etc. Did something at LB and are actively looking at WR. Seems like they are wanting to address some spots in the draft and are taking care of what they can elsewhere so that can happen.
