Yea but if gentlemen is good at scouting players and believes its a deep draft, they might take a shot at a playmaker.

Tavon Austin would be a pretty big reach at #14.

Since 2000 the Giants first 2 picks in a given draft have gone:

    DL 8 0.30%
    DB 7 0.27%
    WR 5 0.19%
    RB 2 0.08%
    TE 1 0.04%
    LB 1 0.04%
    QB 1 0.04%
    OL 1 0.04%

You are clearly dead set against receiver, but how would you evaluate the receiver corps if you take Smitty out of the mix? I don't think anyone would argue against you that LaFell is a decent #2 WR, but that's really all he is (or will be). Meanwhile Smitty turns 34 as the article indicates, and arguably his best asset as a WR (his suddenness and top end speed) are already declining. Given that it takes most receivers at least a year or two to adapt to the pro game and establish a rapport with the QB, and also given the fact that Gettleman has stated he is building for the long term, wouldn't you look for the future #1 WR right now?

This is not arguing against DT or OL, as those are also needs, but there is only 1 first round pick.

I know this was directed at Collin but I don't see Austin as a #1.

Yeah, that's the point. Nobody in the NFL views Austin as a #1 receiver. He's actually shorter than Steve, and it's hard to imagine him ever being more than a dynamic slot receiver. That has value, but not middle of the first round value on a team with so many legitimate needs. Austin is not even very good at catching passes. His hands aren't terrible, but they're average if not below by NFL standards, plus his route running is very raw. He was a dynamic threat in college based on explosive acceleration on plays where he got the ball quickly and that's it. He goes down on first contact and he's so small that people are questioning whether or not he can hold up as a kick returner. Tavon Austin is a better Joe Adams.

OK fair enough, but my primary question directed at you was regarding the use of the pick for a WR. FYI, as I said earlier, if we were to take him, I would hope for a trade down to pick up additional picks.

Sigh. The original question asked you to remove Smith from the equation. I'm quite well versed on your opinion regarding the Smith/LaFell tandem.

Wow, didn't see this coming. Doesn't this make us a bit thin at lb? Beason is no given anymore. How much does this give us back in cap? Who could we now be looking at in both free agency AND now in the draft.
