JR likely signed off on every contract. I suppose there could have been things done when he was waiting for the heart or in a bad way or something but in general owners sign off on larger deals. He obviously trusted Hurney. Too bad there.

I don't blame Hurney for the spending, per se. Spending doesn't bother me. I blame him more for spending on marginal talent. Teams can be competitive up against the cap if they have good players. We maxed out our cap space on a 2-14 roster, and I put that 100% on the general manager.

    Let's hope that was it.

But I think that's unfair really, shit starts at the top. There was a culture here and Hurney got years of rope. Year of contract adventures and bad draft day decisions. Yet he kept the gig.

I have to ask: when you see that happen with people in your line of work, what would you usually think the reason for that is, outside of blood relation? Me, I think ass kisser, follows orders, company man? Works cheap lol?

Pretty clear that Hurney was JR's confidant/bff so things just probably had to get rock-bottom bad before Richardson could fire him. Plus Hurney had all the local media types in his favor. There wasn't really much backlash towards him until a few weeks before his firing.

Not only maxed. Super-maxed. I don't know that any other team has so much of their cap space concentrated in so few players. So yeah, spending that on mediocre or worse talents makes that particularly egregious, but no one else seems to be handing out that many huge contracts regardless of the talent on the roster. For those familiar with fantasy baseball, it looks like a "stars and scrubs" strategy where you shell out most of your allotment on a handful of guys and fill in most of your roster with cheap trash.

Again, JR has a documented history of protecting confidantes even when they proved themselves incompetent. The alternative, as noted earlier, is that Richardson was also somehow condoning or even behind the racism at Denny's. At no time have I ever suggested that JR is an absentee owner. He's deeply involved with his franchise and wants to know about every aspect of it, but the notion that he told Hurney to give Jake $43 million after the worst playoff performance in NFL history is far-fetched. Hurney had the authority to decide who got contracts and for how much.

Yeah, the national outlets finally started piling on. Grantland and ESPN wrote a couple of pieces excoriating Hurney and illustrating just how unbelievably bad he was at his job.

The local guys were kissing his ass to the very end. It was pretty embarrasing. Those fuckers are useless.

Hurney basically overpaid for everybody. It sucked to have so many quality guys up for FA in the same year but he didnt try to hardball any of them. He paid them all like the were all pros. CJ for all his talent still only had one productive year under his belt.

Look how the Giants handled Osi and Bradshaw. And that was a team that went to the SB. If those guys were here Hurney would have given them both 50 mill.

Letting Pep go for nothing was criminal, I dont care what gentlemans agreement was made, he should have been either tagged again or traded the previous year, Hurney flinched in the game of chicken, he had no finesse.

When the Texans let Mario walk they already had proven alternatives in house.

Pretty sure we drafted Everette Brown with that in mind.

    What a fucking mess.
