With Beachy hopefully coming back and Delgado making some improvement, I see they cut the weakest link loose. I just couldn`t stand to watch him pitch. He made Rick Sutcliff look like speedy gonzales.

I didn`t know what BABIP is and I looked it up and found this.

I'm amazed at how many idiotic comments I've seen in favor of the trade because of Hanson's inability to hold runners, as if giving up steals is more important than striking out batters. Paul Maholm is garbage. I do like Minor, Medlen, and Beachy if he can return to his previous level, but Hanson was a better pitcher than all but Medlen even with decreased velocity.

I understand you have a glut of starters you have the option of trading from a strenght to beef up a team weakness. But why another reliever? The pen is young and I thought pretty well setup. I personally would have pushed for second baseman that can bat his weight or maybe a catcher to spell McCann.

That said you can't have enough pitching

Hanson will have an ERA over 5 in the AL and will be lucky to make it through the season.

No. Learn what BABIP and HR/FB are. It's fine to question Hanson's long-term health, but there is no legitimate reason to question his ability. Even with decreased velocity he was still missing bats at the same rate he did before, he was just unlucky in 2012. Also, trading him for a reliever is beyond moronic. At least get a good prospect out of him.

The Atlanta Braves have exercised their 2014 option on the contract of manager Fredi Gonzalez.

What else were they going to do?

The Braves have plenty of SP to be competitive. Hanson hasn't been the same since he tore his rotator cuff. He's lost 4 mph on his FB since he came up and it's not because he was trying to be more of a location pitcher. He complains of back problems. The Braves probably didn't get anymore than they did because nobody wanted him. At least they got something before he fell to pieces. Maybe it will turn out good for both teams. We shall see.

[IMG] Which is more important, throwing the hardest or missing bats? Hanson continued to miss bats at the same rate and he still had great numbers except for 2012. People with knowledge realize that the indicators show how Hanson was unlucky last season on home runs and balls in play (various studies have shown that pitchers have little control over those rates and that they usually hover around 10% HR/FB and .285 BABIP for everyone). It was a stupid move, and anyone who thinks otherwise desperately needs to learn more about baseball.
