with this trade, they'll be at something like $45 million. if they amnesty thomas, by 2013-2014 gordon's contract would be the ONLY contract on the books i they so chose. everything else is a qualified offer to guys coming off rookie contracts or team options.

next year won't be the time to land any free agents, next year will be the time to land more high lotto picks and hope like hell you can attract some talent to spend your VAST cap space on. if not, you'll end up spending it on crap -- but the bobcats will have to spend it either way.

really, that tells me they should have landed a coach in higher regard to assist in landing free agents.

This goes along with building through the draft. Really all the moves they have made since they decided to break up the Wallace/Jackson team have been about getting more draft picks. Who knows if it will work but it does look like they are putting out a consistent effort. It sort of makes up for the draft pick they gave away for Thomas....

Maggette, was a disappointment last year. Injuries or not, the guy put up enough bricks to build new mailbox posts for my whole neighborhood.
The way the tv guys kept talking about his leadership role made me puke. What leadership? If the young players were learning anything from him it was a one year crash course on how to be a ball hogging blackhole for the ball.
The Cats have very few that can score with average ability. Players like Kemba. Dude, just stop shooting. Matt Carol, what the hell are you doing here other than stealing a paycheck? Diop just leave. Nejera(sp?) was more consistent than these others, even though he couldn`t even make most teams in the league.

The color duo, Brown and White, were putting in the effort while being short on talent. Mullens fell in lust with his 3 game and you know the coaches had to be telling him to hit the boards.

The only ones on the team I would spend money to watch would be Henderson, just to see who on the opposing team he would piss off.
Augustine, one of the few where I didn`t cring when he put up a shot.
Bismack, who had the most exciting play for the Cats all year, when he blocked that last Huston(?) shot to seal a rare win.

That's what continues to scare me. Hopefully they prefer Kidd-Gilchrist over Barnes.

In the games I went to, he was the only one who had any willingness to do anything on offense and he's one of the few who seemed like he was making an effort. I thought he played respectably, he just isn't any good anymore.

Agreed on MKG which I would be fine with although I prefer Robinson. This trade isn't the worst thing, although I agree with the effort of Maggette. I think aside from the draft pick whenever that happens is a plus. I guess the difference is Gordon is a better shooter, mostly from 3-pt range which the team needs. Also hopefully he can dress for a full season, so health was something else to consider.

So all in all, not really an upgrade on the team, just addressing a need and hopefully the draft pick turns into something.

If they draft Barnes then they will officially have jumped the shark.....

If they view Biyombo as a 4 then maybe they do not take Robinson but even at the 4 he is always going to be limited, especially on offense. It just seems like you should always go for the big man unless you just do not need him or the small guy is clearly better.

From ESPN Insider. Some interesting points.
Let me make this real simple for you: The Bobcats just purchased a first-round draft pick with money they had to spend anyway.

The headlines will say that Ben Gordon was traded for Corey Maggette, but pay no mind; they're just contracts in this deal. They're not bad players necessarily, but they're roughly equivalent talents with oversized contracts on teams going nowhere.

The real action comes through the draft pick and the money changing hands. Charlotte now has a potential lottery pick in 2014 or 2015, and the cost is the difference in salary (about $14 million). Normally, that would be an excessive price to pay, but these aren't normal times. The Bobcats may not hit the league's salary floor in 2013-14, let alone the cap, so the $13.2 million that Gordon adds to their payroll in that season doesn't stand to hurt them much since they needed to add a bunch of salary anyway. In that sense, they really paid far less than $14 million for the draft pick.

That's assuming they sign absolutely no one in free agency either this off-season or next, which is possible but hardly encouraging.

I would not look for them to do much in free agency this off season. Not much is out there and they need to get minutes for the young guys.
