I suspect Silas and Jordan agreed that this would be his final year as coach long ago. Silas is 68 and does not want to stick around for long term rebuild, which is what the Bobcats are. He probably did want to help his son either get this job or get experience for another place.

They need a younger coach with enough patients to see a long term rebuilding project take place. More than that they need to start making good draft picks.

unless they turn around really quick, you gotta figure the next coach is just going to be a stepping stone. coaches rarely last more than a few years in good situations and this is far from a good one.

So should they hire a guy just to be a stepping stone, or should they hire someone who they think will ultimately be the answer?

I agree that the way it works these days is that by the time a rebuilding project is done, the guy who started it is out the door. I just don't know if it's a good idea to say "yeah, this coach is a throwaway...wait until you see who we hire to replace him", athough I do kind of get the feeling that's what they did with Paul Silas anyway.

coaches are easily replaced, so i'm guessing they look for a diamond in the rough. it'll be a few years before they're competitive so they could probably take a flier on some unproven (cheap) coach and hope he's the next thibodeau, brooks, or frank vogel. those guys are clearly competent at the very least and would probably survive long enough to see some kind of success with the team.

yeah, i'm not saying they'd announce their intentions -- just like they're not going to say they plan on sucking for the next couple years to land draft picks via lotto.

Now has to be the low point. They ought to take the opportunity to shake things up and make some changes. A new team name and logo might be helpful and by symbolic of starting fresh.

They have some young players who can be decent role players. Guys like Henderson, Walker, Bismack, DJ and Mullens can be part of a decent team. They just do not have any stars. They really need to find an all star caliber player in the draft this year.

With Diaw gone maybe they can free up some cap space to sign a free agent, if they can find a decent one willing to come to Charlotte.

I wonder if Herb Sendek is interested.

Best option for the Bobcats would be to sign Malone. Unfortunately, it would cost quite a bit to convince him to come here. He has plenty of options.

I guess we will settle for another "friend of Jordan".

i think shaw would be a better option. malone was with the cavs when they were winning 60+ games, then had a nice effect on noh's defense. but after a blah year in gsw, i think his stock is probably down quite a bit. he'll have lots of options as an assistant, maybe, but not a ton as a head coach.
