picks can go so many different ways tho. so just having a top 5 pick doesn't mean you get a franchise player and if you don't, then you still suck.

Sure, but that's realistically the only chance you have of getting a franchise player, and without one you're going to remain irrelevant.

define irrelevant. if you measure relevancy in the nba by championship rings, then over the last 30 years of basketball, only like what, 9 teams have be relevant? and really only 6 teams have been relevant for more than a single year -- the lakers, the celtics, the bulls, the pistons, the spurs, and the rockets.

there have been plenty of good teams that haven't won rings and i think you'll find the formula to not be quite as cut and dried as needing to have some lotto pick to carry the load.

Damn, on Saturday the Hawks had 8 players in double figure scoring. 8!
    The Bobcats had 2.
The Hawks could have pulled a granny out of the stands and put a jersey on her and she would have looked like a star.

You need at least 2 (very good or superstar - type) players on your team to be relevant in today's NBA. By relevant, I mean being capable of winning the title. You don't want to be the Atlanta Hawks / Philly 76ers, always circling the drain as the 5-7 seed, with a first round upset as the best you're going to get.
Your goal needs to be the title, not just an decent finish each year.

The Bobcats need to get lucky on lottery night and end up with Davis.
THEN, they need to blow again next year (unfortunately) and get another top 3 guy to go with Davis, and then pray that both work out well.
Face it, no FA of any quality is coming to play for the Bobcats. We need to do our damage in the draft.

if your goal is a title, then you better hope you're the lakers, spurs, boston, chicago, or detroit. cuz over the last 32 years, those 5 organizations collected 27 nba titles. miami, dallas, philly, and houston all snuck in there to grab an odd title (houston got 2).

you gotta have the goal of winning games. i'm sure the maloofs would love to have their kings team from a decade ago over the team they have now.

you can also trade for people. but yeah, no free agent is coming here. keep in mind that the atlanta hawks that you lament as being so horrid have some pretty high draft picks on their roster. al horford, marvin williams. josh smith was a solid pick if a bit later in the draft. then you throw in johnson and hinrich... that's like 4 top 10 picks on that roster plus josh smith. and they aren't very good.

Oh, I agree here completely...just having the picks doesn't equal success...see the Bobcats entire draft history.

Man, I went to the game tonight...it was worse in person than you can possibly imagine. I can't say that they're tanking because I really get the feeling that ll the players are trying their best...they're just that bad.

Trading Wallace ended up being a huge mistake. The lack of leadership has been much more important than getting an extra draft pick.
