He's stronger as a LB coach than he is as a DC. The fact that he is a Charger affiliate might give Rivera a woody. But I don't think he's been very successful in most of his NFL gigs.

    EAGLES FIRE MCDERMOTT http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/inq-eagles/Eagles_fire_McDermott.html

After two seasons as defensive coordinator, the Eagles have fired Sean McDermott, the team confirmed.

A replacement has not yet been named, according to an Eagles source.

McDermott's firing comes just five days after head coach Andy Reid said that McDermott would be back next season. The 36-year-old's defense had regressed in nearly every statistical category this past season. Despite such alarming numbers Reid gave McDermott, who had worked his way up from the bottom, a vote of confidence on Monday.

“You’re dealing with a guy that’s a tremendous worker and is a very smart individual,” Reid said a day after the Eagles’ season came to an end with a 21-16 playoff loss to the Packers. “And so I look at it a little bit different than what you do in that I’ve seen him work with young guys, I’ve seen him work through injuries, I’ve seen him stay positive through those situations and still put us in a position to win football games.”

Apparently, that was not enough to keep his job. Reid actually told McDermott that he was going in another direction on Thursday, a league source said.

Reid is away this weekend and will not have a comment, a team spokesman said.

Attempts to reach McDermott have been unsuccessful.

"I'm really surprised because I didn't expect that to happen," Eagles safety Quintin Mikell said in a text message. "I don't know how to take it."

Defensive backs coach Dick Jauron, who the Eagles granted permission to the Browns to interview for their vacant defensive coordinator position, is a candidate, according to a team source. The Eagles are expected, though, to interview a number of other possible replacements.

There are a number of former defensive coordinators looking for jobs, including ex-Browns coach Rob Ryan and former 49ers head coach Mike Singletary.

McDermott, of course, now joins that group. The Eagles promoted him in July, 2009, just days before his predecessor, Jim Johnson, died from cancer. McDermott worked under Johnson for most of his time with the Eagles. He used his aggressive style of blitzing, but his approach was different in many other ways.

McDermott liked to tinker with his defense and substitute players in and out during a series. He dealt with his share of significant injuries in two seasons, but the defense was a major crutch for the Eagles this season. It allowed a franchise-worst 31 passing touchdowns and had the worst red zone efficiency in the NFL since 1998.

"That's business," Eagles defensive end Darryl Tapp said when contacted. "Honestly, the last I heard he was coming back. Yeah, I'm disappointed. You work with a guy all year long you get to like him. But this is the business we work in."

Sean McDermott could be on his way out in Philly

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on October 27, 2010, 7:58 PM EST
Not long ago, Eagles defensive coordinator Sean McDermott was regarded as a rising star. But in the one-plus season since he assumed control of the Philly defense following the illness and ultimate passing of Jim Johnson, McDermott’s star has faded.

The first hints came when coach Andy Reid became involved in the defense play-calling for the first time in his career.

ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio, a former Eagles beat writer, recently told Mike Missanelli of 97.5 The Fanatic in Philadelphia that McDermott could soon be done.

“There is no question about that,” Paolantonio said, via Jordan Raanan of 97.5 The Fanatic. “It may be time for; I don’t know how much input Dick Jauron has in the
defensive game plan, I’m sure he has quite a bit, but eventually they
may have to make a switch there.”

The defense fell apart in a 37-19 loss to the Titans, giving up 27 fourth-quarter points. (see as how this relates to us down below ***)

“It comes down to the defensive coordinator,” Paolantonio said. “He has
some kind of brainlock or whatever it is — lack of judgment, inability
to make adjustments on the fly. The head coach was covering for him this
week [in a press conference], you heard that.”

Still, if the 36-year-old McDermott were destined for an in-season firing, it likely would have happened by now, given that the Eagles are three days into their bye week. The rest of the way, a change would give the Eagles limited time to get the successor (presumably Jauron) ready.

After the season, all bets will be off. And if the defense doesn’t turn around, McDermott likely will be gone.

*** For the season, Carolina outscored its opponents in the first quarter (plus-13) and in the second quarter (plus-31). But they were minus-7 overall in the third quarter and then a staggering minus-60 in the fourth. There's the difference in the season.Did you know that 49 percent of NFL games this season were decided by seven points or fewer? The fourth quarter, ultimately, makes the difference between 6-10 and 10-6, and the Panthers just didn't play well enough in the final 15 minutes of games this past season.

    And finally...

    Philadelphia Eagles Defensive rankings

2008 (JJ as DC) 3rd overall (yards) 18.1 ppg

2009 (SMcD as DC) 12th overall (yards) 21.1 ppg Regressing bigtime

2010 (SMcD as DC) 12th overall (yards) 23.6 ppg
Regressing with points per game, still sliding

    What's telling?

2011- (that mexican OLine guy as DC) 8th overall (yards) 20.5 points per game Fucking improvement.

So....yeah. I know I tend to give the guy a hard time, but....fire that prick. Or we're just going to be mediocre on that side of the ball....

BUt of course, then there's this, if I have to be objective here:

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=6038958

New Carolina Panthers Ron Rivera says he'll be hands-on with the defense. Old friend Sean McDermott will help him.

I wonder just how hands on he is. THing is, I trust Rivera to turn things around on that side of the ball. He's shown he can do it, and do it well. But he's a HC, and he's not coordinating anymore. Different skill set. So...does anyone have a grasp, or has anyone heard just how much Rivera's mits are on the defense?

Stated again for effect: It comes down to the defensive coordinator,” Paolantonio said. “He has
some kind of brainlock or whatever it is — lack of judgment, inability
to make adjustments on the fly.
The head coach was covering for him this
week [in a press conference], you heard that.”

    Gee, ya think?

And the regression already started. Meeks commanded a very average group, although they had to battle being on the field almost all game long while the offense went 3 and out almost every drive.

But even with Meeks having an average to below average unit, we still managed to slip. Injuries, I know. Yeah yeah yeah. Bullshit.

he looks like opie more than shayne graham and i hate that. i'm not sure we're going to be able to rank real high on d. a couple teams in our division that can skew the stats. tampa could be trouble there too depending what happens down there. i think we're going to try and score a lot of points, pressure teams, and build a d for those situations. a d that attacks because the other team is forced to keep up, just like we are. pretty different than what fox built his d for. i think thats the plan. we're suddenly in an offense heavy division. brees, ryan, newton, newton lite. i'm not sure i trust either of the coordinators. fucking chud seems to do the brainlock thing too.

Wasn't meant for anyone who blindly supports someone because they're so intent on being right about something. The fact that you blindly support McDermott and call Cam Newton out repeatedly is all I personally need to know. You've been caught lying, manipulating stats so much here lately, that you should take another one of your year long sabbaticals. Honestly, the way you carry about with your bizarre homosexual overtones with some of the posters here who routinely discredit, emasculate, and abuse you, I'd prefer you just ignore me altogether.

Carry on with your lust for McDermott and Tebow, brother.
