#1 Overall Pick 2011 - Cam Newton (now also 2011 Offensive Rookie Of The Year)

I beg to differ with you on the short red zone tds. I'd say it's more difficult for a qb to score in a condensed field. Our #1 receiver is short so corner routes and jump balls are less likely to work. The zone reads require some vision to be able to work effectively, not to mention after a while teams look for Cam to run there. Tampa also had the #7 defense in 2010, their special teams were much better and Blount had a hell of a year , helping Freeman. Again, you sell Cam short. I'd agree that he shouldn't be crowned just yet but he's had a remarkable rookie year and his future looks very brightifhe puts in the work to improve his footwork and read defenses.

These are EXACTLY my worries about Cam. Bradford's sophomore slump has been awful, and I didn't see it coming. If it can happen to him, it can surely happen to Cam, especially if Chud gets a HC job (and holy shit, if Shurmur deserved it, then Chud DAMN sure deserves it).

 

never followed bradford so i don't know if he's any good or not, but i know he's been getting killed when he drops back. that doesn't help any qb.

 

Not as a runner, given that he ends up with one more blocker than the RB would. I'm not discounting Cam's value there completely because it is nice to have someone who can punch it in, but a lot of those touchdowns could have gone to someone else just as easily. Honestly, if DW hadn't just been signed to a huge extension I'd think they were doing that to kill the RBs' value come contract time.

Freeman wasn't without a supporting cast, but it's obvious that 2011 DW+Stewart have clearly been better than 2010 Blount. The defense can also help stats given that it caused Cam to throw a lot more and get some garbage time numbers. He's had a great season, without question, but you're incorrect in asserting that it's been better than Freeman's in 2010. As I said, Newton does get extra credit for doing it as a rookie while Freeman only did that in his second season.

 

I'm more worried about Cam sucessfully navigating his first real offseason as a celebrity millionaire than I am about how he'll play next year. Hopefully he's got some legal hobbies.
