Signed with Golden State. Looks like they are not going to have a 5 this year. Diaw is going to start at center so I guess they will have 2 4s.

How long before Jordan sells the team or moves it?

They seem pretty set on keeping Diop. It's hard to figure out what they're doing exactly. I think they've decided to gut the team down as far as they can get away with and bascially start over. It'll be a long year, for sure.

7 million dollars for as bad as he is. Hard to feel sorry for the owners when they give this sack of wasted flesh that kind of money

yeah, actually i guess there's no reason to use the amnesty cut if you are just shedding payroll to reduce expenses. they'd still have to pay diop, but by cutting him under the amnesty rule, his payroll wouldn't count towards the cap. somehow, cap space doesn't seem like it's going to be an issue for the bobcats.

actually the amnesty CAN count against the cap if a team wants. apparently up to 85%. teams have to spend up to the salary floor-49mil. clt is at about 47m including diop. if amnestied, they would have to spend to replace him as well as eat his salary and get nothing out of him. and they need a center now if nothing else than a big body.

bill simmons breaks it all down as usual.

    • Your amnesty guy can potentially count against your salary floor (85 percent, as mentioned above), if you choose. For example, the Wizards have $44.7 million of guaranteed 2011-12 contracts right now. Once Lewis gets amnestied, they'll suddenly have $23.6 million counting against their cap — putting them $34.4 million under it — but they'll only have to spend another $4.6 million to hit that $49.3 million salary floor, because, again, Lewis counts for that (if they want).

Now here's where it gets really, really good. We just entered a new era for NBA fiscal responsibility, right? Check out the potential spenders this month.

The following teams are waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay under the 2011-12 salary cap:

    1. Washington: $34.4 million (including Lewis' amnesty clause)
    2. Denver: $33 million (including Harrington's A.C.)
    3. Indiana: $28.5 million (including Posey's A.C.)
    4. Sacramento: $26.2 million
    5. New Jersey: $23.1 million (including Outlaw's A.C.)
    6. Toronto: $17.7 million (including Calderon's A.C.)
    7. Golden State: $16 million (including Biedrins' A.C.)
    8. Detroit: $14-$19 million (depends on Villanueva, Gordon or Hamilton for its A.C.)
    9. L.A. Clippers: $13.1 million
    10. Charlotte: $13 million (including Diop's A.C.)
    11. New Orleans: $12.6 million
    12. Milwaukee: $12.2 million (including Udrih's A.C.)
    13. Minnesota: $11.4 million (including Webster's A.C.)

So they are basically hanging on to Diop since he helps them get up to the salary cap floor. Nice.....

I always thought Jordan was loaded with money from all his endorsement deals and business ventures. He is running the team like he works at Wal Mart handing out shopping carts.

No, they are keeping diop because they have no centers and they still have to pay him regardless if he plays or not. Might as well get some minutes out of him. he is owed 6.9m this year and a player option for 7.3m next year. You think diop will opt out of 7m next year, hell no.

If the amnesty clause wiped a contract off the books and you HAD to RE-SPEND that money the same yearto get to the salary floor, then what good would it be? It gives the team an option. It can also be used next year which might be easier for a team to stomach eating a contract. diop for one year and one buyout year vs 2 buyout years and zero production(which is probably what he will contribute any way) but you get the idea. The salary floor actually makes teams spend money.

They could amnesty diop and have 13m to spend but it doesnt make sense for them to overspend this year when they are still a lottery pick away from being competitive. Get that pick and then go on a "spending spree" when it makes more basketball sense. Sort of like the Panthers did in the offseason. Also this season is going to be a short one so if you have to suck for a year to get a draft pick this is the one to do it. Considering they start on christmas and end in april, the cats season is only 4 months long this year.
