WVU's biggest problem is its television market. Which is damn near non existent. What sells is how many people will turn on the TV and watch you and see the commercials being played during the game. Advertisers will give networks money if it goes out to more people, and THEN networks will pay more to conferences.

The ACC for example already has VA and VaT. Not to mention now Pitt. They gain nothing TV market wise by adding WVU. Which is in the same region with a smaller TV share than all three of those other schools.

Read this on another message board so I can't take credit for it, but found it interesting.

Just read where ECU has applied for membership in the Big East. Not sure the Gville TV market will thrill the Big East. Anyway, it seems the Big East favors adding Army and Navy as football only schools. The wheels continue to spin........

Stupid. Jumping on a sinking ship because its bigger than the dingy they've been on. If the BE collapses ECU could be in trouble. Best case scenario for them is Big East becomes the new C-USA.

Seriously. I didn't even know the SEC had academic standards.

I like your reasoning, but don't agree with your conclusion. SC would never go along with grabbing Clemson, and while VT seems like they would make sense, reports say that the SEC isn't that high on them (guess it really doesn't do much to expand the footprint since Blacksburg is in the boonies). They'd probably love to add Florida State, but it isn't happening. At this point I wonder if they'll have to settle for South Florida or Louisville since it looks like Missouri will be staying in the Big XII.

Maybe, but I think Notre Dame just likes being independent and having complete control over its schedule. I doubt they're worrying too much about qualifying for a BCS game, at least until they actually become good enough again. Plus, as noted, I think NBC renews their contract since there won't be anything left but the Big East to bid on.

What makes you say that? Reports are that the ACC wanted to increase the buyout to 34 but FSU and Maryland wouldn't go for that. FSU has already said that they are exploring their options.

No, FSU never said anything about exploring their options, they said they were monitoring the situation. That meant they were wanting to see how realignment affected the ACC. Adding Syracuse & Pittsburgh was a way to signal long-term strength & stability in the conference. The Seminoles aren't going anywhere and never wanted to.

I think NBC doesn't think twice about renewing the ND contract. However, I would think the reason ND likes to stay independent is to get it's TV money all to itself. I sure as hell hope the school has done a $$$ comparison between what it earns as an independent versus what it could earn in a conference. My thinking is the school has done exactly that and staying independent is better financially.

How long did South Carolina stay independent after the left the ACC before they joined the SEC. It helps to be good so you can don't get 100% of a shitty payday verses 1 portion of a huge financially sound pie
