    Starting:

    Cornerback
Gamble - who has not practiced yet
Munnerlyn - small guy in a big guy's game

Beat guys say that some moves will happen before the regular season starts. Moving Sherrod Martin over for some packages is a possibility.

Um, the secondary will have a target on its back all season if things stay the same. Oh, and Gamble hasn't practiced.

    Defensive Tackle

    Sione Fua - rookie
Corey Irvin - Cut in 2009

Does anybody else hear alarm bells? I know losing Ron Edwards hurt, and the team is fairly well tapped out, but...the backups are Andre Neblett, Terrell McClain and Nick Hayden. If Sean McDermott had big dreams of blitzing, he better wake up.

The Panthers are going to get killed on defense unless something is done, and quick.

Gantt has no idea what he's talking about regarding that. Salary cap cuts have already happened, so the only guys left to get cut are ones who aren't good enough to make their teams.

FWIW, I was the hack in the pressroom on Saturday that asked Rivera about Martin's ability to be worked into the CB rotation. He said, no, but that they would look to utilize him at Nickel and roll another S into Martin's spot

Tonight, sure enough, McDermott had Martin at NB, playing tight man on Naanee, Olsen and Smith while RJ Stanford was playing deep middle alone.

I'm not a "beat guy" but once you get access, it's not that complicated to get info. (not that you care, or should care, but my primary purpose for being at camp is for radio). The team has indicated no desire to pick up anyone else substantial via-FA or trade. Doesn't mean they won't.

Gamble--I can confirm--remains a mystery to me, and at least 3 other writers that you probably know. We don't doubt he was sick--we just would like a little more info, so each of us can satisfy our base (mine not as populated as theirs, of course).

Stomach Illness-some sort of viral deal that's lingered through camp. Everything else is speculation, but I'm not the only one following the team that's puzzled by the length of his absence.

Correct. And the Samuel speculation actually has some backbone behind it beyond the CLT source, but it's going to take more than the team can give up to land him.

I think corner is a bigger problem than DT. We have managed to platoon DT in the past and more or less gotten away with it but it is hard to cover up not having a decent starting corner.
