First and foremost I personally am not big on Cam Newton and can not and wont defend the choice.

With that said, he has one huge quality that will serve him well with his team mates at least to a point and that is leadership. Similar to Tebo with respect to being able to lead people. Unlike Tebo with respect to the whole above board and proving it for a long period of time stuff.

I could care less that he snubbed King and Collin is more than likely correct about being more concerned about what his team thinks than King and not putting himself above the team.

I think fans need athletes to follow the rules. It's why they detest Barry Bonds for what he did. Plenty of people think Newton broke the rules when he went to Auburn, so they are doing all they can to bring him down.

I don't really get the selfish comment. Dude says he wants to be great. Nothing wrong with that. In fact, I want all my players to want to be great.

Being an Alabama fan I have as much reason to hate on Newton as anyone. He wasn't a pre-draft favorite of mine at all but I have honestly changed my opinion of him because of all the stories I have read about him working hard and building relationships with his teammates. He did it at Blinn and Auburn and now here in Carolina.

    What is selfish about that?

He's a football version of A-Rod. Everything he does is a calculated move to affect how people see him. Newton is not a natural leader like Brady or a good person like McNabb, he's a cult of personality type character who wants to be the center of attention and have everyone follow him.

He's young. With the right mentors he can mature in the right way.

No, it's a personality thing. It doesn't mean he can't be a good or even great player (or shitty one for that matter), but his personality isn't going to change.

A lot of people have that same opinion and I can't argue with them. Unfortunately a lot of superstar college athletes rub people the same way.
