    From MMQB:
Ray Edwards, Falcons (5 years, $27.5 million). It's a mystery why the market for Ray Edwards never developed. He's young and consistently productive at defensive end. Edwards is getting half of what Charles Johnson got in Carolina, and while Johnson does have a higher ceiling, Edwards was one of the most productive pass rushers in the league last year with 69 combined sacks, hits and hurries on 416 pass rushes. (Johnson had 81 on 481).

Exactly. The whole point of re-signing your own is that it's supposed to give you a break. Instead, Hurney has consistently paid tens of millions of dollars more than those players would get on the open market. He's an idiot, and he's by far the biggest reason Carolina is in the mess it is. He caused salary cap before with this same behavior, and he's racing to get back there again.

    I think that's spot-on right.

The squad played in a vacuum the last couple of years, with a lame John Fox and the looming lockout. And I think assurances were made to key players. There was no widespread rebellion or discontent coming from the players, even though they suffered the embarrassment of a 2-14 season and had the uncertainty of CBA rules pertaining to free agency.

The Johnson offer was, I believe, preset to accomplish two things: retain a franchise cornerstone and to send a message. The other offers followed the same philosophy. Whether or not we think Hurney gave away the farm doesn't matter. They had a plan and they worked the plan.

If someone has a plan to get loaded up on coke and fuck enough Tryon Street hookers to catch AIDS by Monday morning, you don't give them credit for following through.

crack whore analogy, while strong with Norm McDonald, certainly isn't realistic (shocking).

08 is a good analogy that includes room for failure, success.

Im getting tired of reading all this paying to keep a 2-14 team together. CJ and DW were not the reasons we sucked royal ass. We're keeping our good players and letting the deadwood walk, ie Marshall, King, Rosario etc.

Im not trying to defend Martys contracts but first and foremost im a Panther fan and want to see us keep our good players. It was costly but we accomplished it.

Lets not pretend that a 2-14 team with 2 very young qbs at the helm is the place for every vet to be. NE and Phily have earned that respect, they consistently perform year in year out.

We could have lost CJ, Dlo, Smitty, Anderson, let Davis walk and started fresh.

But would they have come knowing we let everyone walk.

To put this in further context, Charles Johnson had a sack, hit, or hurry on 16.8% of his pass rushes last season. That earned him $12.66 million per season from the Panthers. Meanwhile, Ray Edwards had a sack, hit, or hurry on 16.6% of his pass rushes, and Atlanta is paying him $5.5 million per season. So for an extra 0.2% chance of getting a sack, hit, or hurry, the Panthers paid $7.16 million extra per year. Now obviously Johnson and Edwards won't maintain those exact levels in 2011 and beyond, but it's worth noting that Edwards was better than Johnson in 2009, so there's no guarantee that CJ will suddenly open a huge gap on him.

Honestly, find me one Falcons fan on the planet who would trade Edwards and his contract for CJ.
