Pick your poison ERA advantage Phils, Complete Games or shut outs? Advantage Phils. Braves have more strike outs and .04 better era, but more bases on balls. Team ERA? Phillies by a smidge. Quality starts? Phils again, Earned runs? Phillies again

The braves pitching advantage is in their bullpen. The difference in BBs and SOs can probably be explained by the number of innings pitched. The braves pitchers have thrown 30 more innings than the phils.

Bullpen advantage can be explained because the Phillies starters go further than the Braves. The Phillies bullpen arms have a LOT less mileage on them verses the Braves, something that could come back to haunt you in September. Heck both teams have great arms. Most teams would love to have either of these staffs.

All those innings can take a toll on the starters as well.

The only Philly starter that goes deeper in the game is Halliday

Maybe so but those good arms had better arms in front of them. You have to keep peopple moving through the system so as to make room for young talent.

Could be that the Phils are hesitant to go to their bullpen where the Braves don`t seem to mind it.

Well the Phillies have had injuries causing 4 (off the top of my head) Phillies to have to close for them. Bastardo, Madsen, Contreras (sp) and Baez. Not that is an excuse but having starters that average ~7 inning a start doesn't make you have to go to the pen as quick. Also I posted something about the work load some teams have put on their bull pen and how it'll come back to haunt them later on in the season.
Bottom line the Phillies starters have always been inning eaters all of their career. Halladay just had his streak of I think 66 games he started where he pitched into the 6th inning broken. It's not a case of being hesitant, the Phillies starters make it unnecessary
