Great news, our team would have been substantially worse without him.

agreed .. . but it depends on how they use him. Put smitty in the slot, and spell him with that pilares kid. Keep him fresh and hungry for the damn ball

Personally I would have been totally pissed off with less than a first rounder from Smitty. That wasn't going to happen so we'll keep the best play maker this team has ever had and feel damn lucky he's on our side.

I should commit to not reading another Fowler article until 2012. He is sooo far from knowledgeable about football that I just get pissed thinking that people believe what he is writing.

That being said, this part is right on the money:

I don't think there's any way Smith would have been with the Panthers this season if John Fox was still the Panthers' coach and Jeff Davidson still their offensive coordinator. I believe that relationship was beyond repair.

And I hope this part is too:

But Smith is re-energized by what's happened this past offseason, and he's ready to play the final two years of his current contract in Charlotte and eventually retire as a Panther "in one year or five years," as he said.

Smith sounds resigned to it, rather than determined by it, which could mean that retire number does come sooner. And it's easy to say that you and your family decided to stay after there's no trade offers.

Of course, he'd been working out with Cam for a few weeks now, privately, which just came out. I don't know that happens if he were tied to leaving 'or else'. I think that was an interesting move.

Cam does seem like he'd be good at connecting with guys like Smith and making them feel like the team can compete, but we'll see how the relationship goes when Steve isn't getting the ball.

We'll see how he responds when Clausen starts the season and underthrows him down the field again.
