"We have Charles (Johnson), we have Greg Hardy, Everette Brown and Eric Norwood and some young guys. We just felt like it was something if we were going to do, which we probably would, that this was the time to do it."

The Panthers also officially cut ties with 41-year-old kicker John Kasay, two days after agreeing to terms with free agent Olindo Mare. Defensive end Hilee Taylor was released, and the team withdrew offers to quarterback Keith Null, defensive tackle Ed Johnson and linebacker Nic Harris.

The Panthers signed linebacker Omar Gaither, who played for Philadelphia under Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott. Gaither, a Charlotte native entering his sixth NFL season, played at Myers Park High and Tennessee.

I wish we kept Hilee, but I guess there is a ton of competition at that spot now.

Really, really, really not comfortable with the mix at right end. Brown has shown nothing, Hardy looked promising at times but is really more of a left end, and the idea of Norwood playing anything but obvious passing situations is sketchy.

Brown and Norwood are tiny, at least Brayton had that. We need more, im assuming they mean on addressing it, letting the deadwood go and bringing in his guy.

Damn we're a young team. 32yr old Brayton and 41yr old Kasay cut, we dont have a lot of vets on this team.

Gaither adds nice depth at lb, and he had to come cheap. He ended up starting a lot of games in philly because of injuries, and was never great, but never a glaring hole.

Not certain we're done, but had anticipated that this could happen, a left end with Johnson and right end between Hardy/Brown. It gives them the space to grow into it, and they have the talent between them. Will suck if it doesn't work, though.

    Gaither as bargain buy:
    Omar Gaither, LB

PFF also states that we have two LB - he and Connor - buried on the depth chart that should be starting somewhere.

I'm bullish on Hardy, but not sure he's developed enough yet. Brown, I don't see a lot there.

Would have been nice to do more, but then again I didn't expect everything to be plugged all at once. We'll probably pick up a cut player or two and muddle through.
