my worry about him isn't the new scheme, or whether he can be good against run or pass or anything like that, it's that Baker was a hell of a DL coach, and now we're going to a guy without a lot of experience.

I don't know that it'll realistically impact that much, or that he'll forget to play or anything, but he did start really putting more in last year, and it came out with more production.

yup. back when they drafted newton if I knew that both he and cj would be had for a little over 110 mil i would have felt like that was not such a bad raping for a possible top 10 DE and a possible future starting QB and team leader

"According to the source, Johnson's deal is for six years and $72 million with $30 million guaranteed. The first three years of the deal are worth $46 million, the source said."

ten million more in the first 3 years than second 3.

Why the fuck is NFL.com referring to Charles Johnson as a linebacker?!?!
I know he's not a known commodity around the league but damn!

My god I didn't think it'd be 12 million a year. I'm not sure he's worth that. I assume the felt losing him would have been catastrophic. He did have a very good year and was our best defensive player last year along with Anderson.
We had roughly $32million to spend this year to reach the cap. We are well on our way. Apart from our own guys there simply isn't enough room to bring in anybody but depth, we might be able to grab a nice DT but little else

The good news is that means he'll count less in a couple of seasons when the Panthers are actually trying to compete. The bad news is that it means there isn't funny money at the end of the deal inflating the value.

wouldn't anticipate many teams to pull a fast one just yet. Which, I guess we might do some front loaded deals now, while we can, to weed out other suitors on guys we want. I'm OK with that - I didn't expect 5 premier FAs or anything, hoping for maybe one (outside what we might need to spend if replacing Smith) and a bit above average player or two. Hopefully that premier guy is a DT or CB.

I still like it. Looking back, I have the first PFF article on him that said that he was the 8th best end for rushing in 2008. And that was on a defense that was a bit of a mess. I really think, had he not gained weight for DT in 09, a mistake IMO, we'd have a lot more tape of him being a terror.

I like the front-loaded deals this year. (edit: not plural yet but I'm hoping.)

I like Johnson as a player.

If he's healthy, years four/five should be good value.
