Johnson gets the deal at a time when his productive years are right in front of him. Good investment by the Panthers.

Others who haven't followed Carolina and don't know Charles Johnson are laughing at the coinage Johnson received. "One year wonder," some of them say. Which means they don't know squat.

Johnson was and is the Panthers' strongest player. Until 2010, Johnson worked a lot at DT, swinging between that and RDE as Fox tried to satisfy Peppers by playing him in space in a quasi-linebacker role. Johnson said nothing and continued to work.

Last season, Johnson racked up double-digit sacks, most of them in the second half of the season, against defenses that were skewed his way. Opposite him was...Everette Brown? Tyler Brayton? Shows that Johnson's skills, development and dedication to making himself a better player had come together at the right time.

Barring injury - which is the great equalizer - in two years, the league will be looking at this deal and wondering how the Panthers got off so cheap. And it's the safest investment they could have made.

Richardson is coming out of the gates swinging! I like what I'm seeing so far. How's that for a "cheap ass owner"? This organization wants to win and is willing to pay for the talent to do it. It also sounds like we're not giving up on Williams either, hopefully by the end of the day he'll have a deal done as well.

yeah, I don't know that a $12 mil deal is ever cheap.

If he plays like 2010 every year, that'd be nice. I liked the guy out of college, would've drafted him a round higher (that would've bailed us out of Jarrett too, I guess). I'm not going to pretend like that's not a fuckass boatload of money. But he'll be 31 at the end of it, so he's got room to pull into the meat of his contract while he's most physically able.

Chaz means well, but he is pretty consistent about making retarded statements. I guess I was being unrealistically hopeful, but I was hoping to re-sign him for a lot less than that. There is just way too much history of defensive ends putting up a couple of good to great seasons and then disappearing. Charles Johnson is not an elite talent, he's just an above average one that has used technique and tenacity to post near-elite production. $12.6 million a year for a guy no one is absolutely sure about is definitely painful, but the lack of alternatives means I can't bitch about it too much. It sucks for the team, but I guess it had to be done. And fuck the Falcons for driving up the price.

Why do you say it's front-loaded? Remember that signing bonuses are pro-rated over the length of the contract. Actually having that as signing bonuses means that it's a lot less front-loaded than it could have been if half of that money was in a 2011 roster bonus. We'll have to see what the base salaries look like, but the huge signing bonus makes me think that it probably is back-loaded.
