really hard to say. If you go based on the past, the cap value would be less than the average value of the contract per year, but with the higher minimum (and the idea of starting over), that might be higher than the average value of the contract per year.

If you suggest that it's equal, my guess is Johnson earns $10 million in 2011, Beason $8 million. Yes, that's weird. But ends make more. no idea what rookies will be worth, there's no idea whether it's a 4 or 6 year, if salaries will be controlled, any of that.

Yeah, the biggest selling point in the past was about JR being the only former player, etc. It will be interesting to see if him being a hardass in the lockout squanders that goodwill. This area is a great place to raise a family, but it doesn't have the nightlife to interest young talent, and in a "what have you done for me lately" league, players will hold 2-14 against the team more than they'll give credit for playoff appearances in the recent past.

In other news, with the Panthers being so far under the cap and needing to spend so much money, it would be great to see them frontload contracts instead of the backloading that has gotten us in salary cap trouble before. If we're going to pay Kalil, Johnson, Beason, etc then let's put a lot of money up front so that we continue to have flexibility in future years.

hopefully. This is certainly a unique opportunity. Even with the Deion Sanders rule, most teams have had that dead money issue, which makes the cap much more dangerous. I don't know how that counts, but it doesn't count, at the same time.

If we need to spend money then lets lock up our own players. Beason, Kalil, Davis, Anderson, Johnson are all guys we want to keep if money is not a factor. I may be alone in this opinion but I think we have a good base of young talent on our defense. I think it was better last year than it gets credit for. The 2-14 season was mostly due to horrible offense.

A solid veteran QB to serve as insurance for a Camplosion would be nice to have. Might be hard to get anyone decent to play for what is likely to be a one year stint at best. Maybe an old guy like Kitna would do it.

Unfortunately that side of the ball matters, too.

I never said it didn't. My point is that if we keep our own guys our defense should be good.

The article used 124 mil as the cap. I just heard they have agreed on 120 million as a team cap.

Same deal as before. Just a little less to spend. We still have WAY more space than anyone else. Actually puts us in place to be a serious threat to sign some "names".

or build up some decent depth at positions of need. I think getting our offensive line healthy and playing together will be a huge first step. Get some form of pass rush from the DTs so whatever DB we get/resign won't have to cover for minutes verses seconds
