If not a QB #1, what do we do for a QB?

the reason to gamble is that he, of any player in this draft, would have the most immediate impact and give us our best chance to get to the playoffs next year.

he doesn't have to come in and be able to make every throw accurately right off the bat. all he has to do is be able to make enough throws to keep the D honest and not turn the ball over. he just has to be someone that his teammates are willing to get behind and go to war with.

the bitch of this is that I'm defending a guy that I'm not confident in because he seems to be the only good option and I can't see going into next season without a different QB than Jimmy and Matt. Newt may never be worth a damn but I do think he will still be light years better than those two.

guy won't make an immediate impact. He's not ready to play. I'd say least ready of any player ranked top 15 by consensus.

And that's what I mean. There not being tons of options doesn't mean you choose him and rely on a guy who doesn't fit. Things like that are big reasons QBs bust.

I still would like to see McNabb come in here and start right away, cut Clausen and put Tony Pike at #2

Remember that quote was to someone else, I was just reposting it for you. But for the record, I am not saying that Newton won't be a good quarterback. The tools are there for him to be above average, but from what I have seen, I do not believe that he even has the potential to be elite. I just don't see it.

Jesus Christ, dude. I'm actually trying not to insult you, so please don't post shit like that. It's like putting a plate of doughnuts in front of Starr Jones. The idea that Newton would "have the most immediate impact and give us our best chance to get to the playoffs next year" is unquestionably wrong. No debate, no opinion, no chance. That's just completely wrong. If you want the team to pick Newton, then it should be for what you think he will become in 3-4 years. If you actually do want someone to provide immediate impact and help the team become competitive, then a rookie QB is the last thing you should want.

And if the Panthers do pick Newton, they do it knowing (though not admitting to it) that he sits year one. There's risk-taking, then there's insanity. With no offseason and virtually no training camp, no first round QB will play much year one.

I don't think the Panthers are desperate enough to play their #1 pick QB year one.

If Carolina does the sensible thing and selects Dareus, then I hope they bring in a vet. My favorites are Jackson and (begrudgingly) Bulger. May be okay taking a flier on Hanie, but he doesn't have the tape to make him a priority get. Fact is, the Panthers need to go into "camp", or whatever it turns out to be, with two vets, plus Clausen and Pike. Moore can be one of those vets.
