If not a QB #1, what do we do for a QB?

We already have a chicken shit in Jimmy Clausen... so I'll pass on Gabbert.

yeah, i know. him and most of the rest of the world. but as joe said, he comes across to me as a taller Clausen with pretty hair. i'd take just about anyone before him ... and he will probably become the one "franchise" QB of the bunch.

i got all worked up and disappointed when we didn't land Leftwich ... and, I've been pretty happy with Gross and was pretty happy with Jake. so, hopefully Marty can pull something outa his ass again.

I don't know that there's one answer to the question, but there not being one definitive option above all others isn't the reason to gamble on an inaccurate QB. Not having better solutions elsewhere doesn't mean taking this by default.

Flacco, Ryan, Bradford, Stafford, others played reasonably well initially because they were accurate.

Which, combined with a likely 4 year cap on rookie contracts, should be exceptionally alarming in the first overall pick context. You may pay your QB 75% or more of his contract, based on bonuses, before you know what you have, and then if he's decent, your reward is you get no reproduceability before the next contract.

Fair enough - but what Delhomme types have taken a team to a super bowl and a couple of NFCCG? Delhomme, Warner, ?? Trying to think of other inexperienced undrafted or late drafted guys who came in as free agents and wound up being capable of leading a team to a championship game, and I cant. Some of the redskins teams. Jeff Garcia was a great grab.

I don't think it's as easy as you believe. Who are some other guys who've done it?

Because I'd be down with that plan, too. I just think it's harder than drafting one high.

Our differing opinion of Clausen is where we disagree.

FWIW, I'm comparing him to other shitty horrible bust rookie qb's....:lipsrsealed2:

For a while there just about every playoff team was being quarterbacked by someone either undrafted, drafted low, or not playing for their original team. Lately that's shifted around so that most were 1st round picks by those teams, so clearly you can have success either way. It's absolutely true that a Drew Brees doesn't come along in free agency all that often, and that passing has become even more important in the current NFL. So I'm perfectly fine with drafting a QB high in the first round if I'm extremely confident that he'll have a long, successful career. Unfortunately I don't feel that way about any of the guys in this class. A lot of them have the potential to become starters, but I have absolutely no clue which guy will end up being the best one.

okay, so if you're gonna hold your breath until you turn blue in the face then i will simply dismiss what most of the world is saying about him.

Agree. Where I differ is I'm ready to take the risk. It's a huge one, but I'm ready to take the risk on Newton rather than risk looking around for a few years.
