If not a QB #1, what do we do for a QB?

Obviously, I'm of the opinion that Clausen is not the answer. I really wanted him to be, and then i really hated him as much as Carr. He showed NOTHING, and even rookies in bad years on bad teams usually show something. Moore, IMHO, had his chance and choked.

In 299 attempts, he threw 3 touchdowns, never to a WR. One to Stewart on busted coverage. 2 Pick 6 on his 9 INT. sacked 33 times ( over 10% of dropbacks. ) That doesn't count throw aways. I'd be willing to bet he was sacked, intercepted, or threw away 25% of drop backs. 5.2 yards per attempt.

I will bet $100 that Newton will be better than that, rookie year, shitty team.

As a franchise, we have not been winners without solid play at QB. Delhomme can get panned, but he got us there.

    Carson Palmer? Volek?

People would really rather have Volek and Dareus over Newton?

I don't see how we have a chance to win without a playmaker at QB, and I'm not sure how we get one THIS YEAR if we dont go for it with #1 pick.

absolutely --- dareus (or green or the CB, really). just not newton.

don't see how to get a playmaking QB if you don't take him no. 1 overall? how did manning, brady, brees, rivers, roethlisberger, rogers, vick, schaub, ryan et al get on their current teams?

I was referring to QB this year. This year, we have #1 overall.

So - we either go UFA (unknown), we trade down and draft a different one with a first rounder, or hope for a high second rounder in the trade, or we wait until next year.

You didn't say what we do about QB - the most important position - this year.

I think any veteran quarterback will have a much better chance at being successful next year than Newton or any other rookie. I do not want to watch another year of crappy football just to develop a rookie who may end up being a bust. An efficient QB who is a solid game manager will allow us to have a little balance in our offense and get our run game going again. If we are playing with a lead or at least not turning the ball over a lot then our defense will look a lot better, especially with Daerius on board.

I would rather have Volek and Daerius than Newton, yes. I would go further and say I would rather have Moore (assuming he is healthy) and Daerius than Newton.

Right, and can we all stop talking about Volek? Apparently we aren't looking there. Chud might have something to do with it. Maybe Volek is a little bitch who doesn't want to start, and he knows that.

    But let's stop saying Volek.

Sure, we can go game manager. Hell, let's go get Grossman. I know the FA QB class this year looks AH-SOME!

As to Clausen, we absolutely can not sell him as our #1 to the fans or to the team. No way. I doubt he can be sold as the #2 no matter what he does in camp and hope they don't try.

Newton, too many red flags for me. Add that whatever college QB coming in will be at a severe disadvantage this year, since he's locked out and won't even get to look at a playbook until who knows when. Unfortunately for us, the worst year probably in the history of the NFL to have the 1st pick. Black cat.

Take the BPA, if we are stuck at the top, realizing that this isn't a one offseason fix. Whoever Gregory/scouts/coaches think that is. Notice I didn't include Hurney in that sentence. Wishful thinking.

If Moore is sufficiently healed, sign him to a cheap two year deal, sign or trade for another vet, let the chips fall where they fall as far as who starts. If Moore is not ready, another vet that looks good as the #2 if not starting. Make Clausen the #3 and give him this year to prove he could hack it as the #2 by '13. Stash Pike on the PS if we can.

QB peaks later than any other position in the NFL (besides K/P). The odds are very good that taking someone like Kellen Clemens and putting him into the lineup will actually produce better results for now than just going with Cam Newton. Who knows how good Newton might be in four or five years, but for the immediate future the team would be better off choosing a veteran, even one who has not had success to this point. Someone like Bulger who has had success would be an even better bet, but frankly I'd be more interested in finding another Delhomme-type who can prove himself adequate for multiple seasons to come.

problem is that this year there is Newton and then a huge dropoff. i'm not totally sold on Newt but I will be happy as hell if we draft him and probably pissed as hell if we don't.

we need a QB that will give this some franchise some immediate hope. and beyond Newt, I don't see anybody else doing that.
