I think Marty's got a fair amount of job security, like it or not. As much as a GM of a 1-15 team has. He was smart enough politically to detach himself from Fox, and align himself with the owners wants and vision. It may not be what was best for the team in the short run, but its what was best for himself and his career.

If he does draft Newton, and he busts out after 3 years, itd be harder for him to escape again with the same trick. Particuarly if its true that Richardson "wasn't sold" on Cam, but would leave the decision to the staff. He's in a pickle because if he doesn't get the coaching staff the QB they want, he can be screwed policially just as much.

It was awful value, no matter how you cut it.

Agree (edit: with both sentences). And some was Edwards' own fault but Fox had a big time negative 'tude from the jump about him.

As far as Smitty, I think he's gonna be playing somewhere else, which would make investing that pick in one of those WRs less questionable.

Hurney reaching for a pick doesn't mean I hate Edwards. Not his fault we took him, and put him in an impossible situation, surrounded by his ASU fans and family.

But, sure, it's time to take the diapers off and play ball. Rivera says he wants to utilize him. I believe him. It will be up to AE to execute and perform. I think if a player like Randle-El can be productive for 4-5 years, AE can as well. But, he must be committed to the system, and the coaches must teach him and use him wisely.

Pads off, AE had moves like Goodson. Pads off, Goodson looked great in minicamp 2009.

Pads on, Goodson stunk in 2009. Much better in 2010.

Pads on, Edwards stunk in 2010. HOpe 2011 fares better. He's had a year now to get in WR conditioning. If he failed to do that, cut him.

Yes, I would expect him to play right away or I wouldn't be taking him #1 overall, especially given that the team doesn't have a second rounder. There's not a lot this team can do to improve itself, so every opportunity has to be seized. Drafting a QB at #1 who isn't ready to play is flushing one if not more years straight down the crapper.

Newton is more mentally strong than Young, has a better arm, and has a more conventional if also more mechanical throwing motion. So they're not identical, but it's silly to say that they aren't very similar. Or compare him to McNabb if you want, who was also a big arm that struggled with accuracy and timing on short and intermediate routes, only McNabb had a perfect attitude while this guy has huge red flags as to his character.

Well, he's also less accurate, has less touch, and may be more questionable in his throwing decisions.

I'm saying there is no way to draw that conclusion based on the team he was handed last year so your conclusion is just a guess.
