Best QB, 2011 draft

Collin and I disagree on mechanics a good bit. I think you can coach a QB into proper mechanics. Whether they take to it is harder to say. Guy like Carr had a weird throwing motion and one of the things that they say helped make him fail was that he came here because we'd let him do whatever he wanted with his motion. same, obviously, with Jake, which is why it's hilarious that Scherer 'ruined him' by actually coaching him. Maybe RS is shit, maybe not, but wanting a player to be consistent and do the same thing as required by the system seems a reasonable suggestion.

Both top QBs have hired QBs coaches, and those guys constantly work with their guys on their motion. Which, to me, sure, is necessary. I'd drill it, constantly. I'm definitely in favor of QBs coaching, not only as a technique situation, but as a consistency situation. Whether that will work with a young QB, where you have to tear a guy completely down while nurturing the mental side of the game, is obviously a harder question. Expecting any coach to get a Newton ready right now, for a game a few months away when there's probably very limited time left once he gets a playbook, is too much to ask.

 

Maybe RS is a genius, and the quarterbacks recently who've had poor showings and downward spirals under his coaching just suck.

Maybe he was right to come in and try and change everything about a reasonably successful quarterback in the twilight of his career.

I think Stanzi will be a guy to watch. Maybe not an immediate impact but a few yrs down the road he could be the steal of the draft.

 

yeah, fuck a coach for coaching. Everyone should be a pushover like McCoy and let quarterbacks do whatever they feel like. Players shouldn't be coached, just catered to.

 

That's another thing. Newton doesn't fit the professed style of offense at all. If they draft him, they would really need to scrap most of Chud's playbook and construct something more suited to Cam's talents. He has the arm to handle the vertical elements, but that's about it.

Yeah, I'm on the record as not being a believer in that. Footwork seems to be easier to coach, but for whatever reason the track record of significantly changing someone's throwing mechanics at the NFL level is just really bad. By that point there is far too much muscle memory involved, plus millionaires are more resistant to coaching. The larger point of accuracy has more to do with natural feel than mechanics anyway, although a cleaner, consistent throwing motion will definitely help. That's not necessarily about the classic style either, since Rivers has a goofy-ass motion, but repeats it the same way every time, and has an instinctive feel for how to arc the pass and what velocity to put on it. It would be interesting to look at the stats and see if any QBs improved their completion percentage by 8% or more from their first three seasons to their peak three.
