It's hard to argue against Dareus, easier to argue for having a QB worth a shit. Mags or Collin, lets say you get your wish and the team picks Dareus. What's now your long term approach for fixing the offense?

Get a vet, make the line stop being shitty, and call plays that fans at home can't see coming based on the formation. Frankly it's delusional to think that Newton would do much of anything to help the offense in 2011 either. If we draft a QB, it's with two or three years from now in mind.

For that matter, I think we keep overlooking how deep the QB position is in this draft. Passing on Newton and Gabbert doesn't mean ignoring it altogether and just hoping that Clausen gets better. You could easily bring in a vet to start, then add Stanzi or Dalton in the third to compete with Clausen.

Accuracy will always be an issue, for any QB. As bad as people are bagging on it i dont think its Jake Locker bad. Vick was known for shitty accuracy, he managed to overcome that somewhat. What i want to know is does he have the work ethic and desire to improve. At least Cam seems to be saying the right things right now. Some of the articles of late are very encouraging reguarding his work ethic and leadership skills. Seems Beason and Williams have had their say on the matter too.

As far as spread offense and the curse goes how about Sam Bradford, lets just pretend he broke the curse for us.

I dont know what to say about the one year wonder thing since i guess nobody cares about the Blinn championship. He's a junior, 6'6", won the heisman, national championship. Why stay when you can declare and become the #1 rated QB thanks to Luck staying. Stay and you really do have everything to lose.

    I think its about commitment.

If we draft Newton #1 overall were basically saying, this is our guy. I dont think he's gonna get 2 years to sit and learn. Unless a vet comes in i dont see how he isnt the starter very early indeed.

If we draft another late round guy then were saying, he could be the future given a few years to learn the ropes. But were not gonna hang the franchise on him. He may pan out, he may not, were not really committed to him. We hope he's a Brady but he's more likely a Fasani. And if that's the case why not bring in the vet and let Clausen sit and learn like he should have done.

I watched a lot of Ricky Stanzi living in Iowa. He is just a guy, he might be an ok backup a few years down the road, nothing more. I don't know anything about Dalton, but from what I read, it doesn't sound like he'll be there in the 3rd. If we had the second rounder, I think there will be a guy like Kaepernick or Mallet that would be worthy of that pick that has a chance to be good. I don't see a guy being there in the 3rd worth a shit.

I agree, that's why my question was specifically what's your LONG TERM approach. I'm not asking how we get into the playoffs in 2011. I'd rather take a mulligan next year with a nice outlook for the team in 2012 and beyond.

Having a long-term QB is overrated. Really, you should only be looking at 2-3 year windows, and veteran guys can fill that spot. A lot of teams continuously make mistakes at quarterback by obsessing about whether or not a guy they choose now would be the right one five years into the future, when they should really be considered about what helps them win now. Quarterbacks peak later than any other position (not counting kicker/punter), and it's not unreasonable to expect a vet to come in and perform reasonably well his first season in the system.

Like Stanzi, don't know much about Dalton.

I would rather wait till 4th or 5th. Stanzi will prob be gone. But I think TJ Yates would be great in the 6th.
