Why do the same people continuously ignore how I'm able to point out QBs who would have success elsewhere if given a chance, and who then usually do have that success when that chance presents itself? Truly elite quarterbacks are the most valuable thing that an NFL team can have, but those are extraordinarily rare, and there do not appear to be any in this draft. Meanwhile there isn't a lot of difference between someone like Joe Flacco and Marc Bulger. Or as I pointed out a while back, keep in mind that the Giants won the Super Bowl in spite of Eli Manning. It's actually laughable that New York paid him all that money when there are a hundred other guys as good if not better. Competent QBs are not hard to find, you just have to avoid the high talent-no brain guys who can really hurt your team.

My take: newton is a physically gifted system qb. I watched him play last year and couldn't believe how open many of his receivers were. Much like tebow, I think newton was helped tremendously by a good offensive scheme that played to his strengths. I'm not sure those talents translate to the NFL. There would need to be a strong qb support system in place to grow newton into the player that lives ip to the top-pick status. Do the panthers have that in-house?

No doubt there will be some flashes of physical ability his first year, but I don't see him panning out long-term. Unlike tebow, newton has character issues. Nobody ever doubted that tebow was a hell of a leader, either. You never have to worry about tebow not working hard enough. And thus a guy that needs a good qb support system to help him be successful, too.

I'd be much happier building the team from the lines out. If that gets Carolina the worst record next year, and the qb position still hasn't been addressed, then take Luck with the top pick.

Agreed. I think newton has too much franchise-setback potential.

    So would Ponder, I think.

For the record, I was confident in Tebow's ability to improve and make good decisions based on the perception of his approach, work ethic, and intelligence. I just don't have a good feel for those things when it comes to Newton. I hear stories about him being a hard worker, then see him hot-dogging and showing off. He has better physical skills than Tebow, but I trusted that Tebow would put his head down and bust his ass to improve every day of his career.

We'd likely need a trade partner for that, and I dont think we'll have one.

There is at least a rationale behind gambling that Newton can be a franchise QB, even I don't agree. Ponder really isn't comparable, even if he may end up being better just because Newton flames out.

I agree. What I also liked about tebow going to Denver was that he had good support and wasnt required to start year one.

I'm just saying that there is another QB that would also be an upgrade in those three areas you said newton would.

there are plenty of QBs in this draft. I agree that you take the best guy on your board - which to me is Dareus. And anecdotal evidence is all I've seen on his downside. I know it's there, but nobody who fights him off so they can Cam all over themselves has said it.

I dunno. Guy's obviously talented. If he were a boy scout, people would be talking about his accuracy, which is clearly the biggest issue in playing QB, and clearly an issue with everyone in this draft compared to the last one. But nobody talks about that.

so, bitches. Sell me on why the Heisman curse, one year issue, spread QB, accuracy issue, why none of that means anything.
