Well for one the guy who everyone thinks is fat and lazy now, and the guy whose work ethic is questioned blew Darius away this season as far as production.

Darius seems to be a strong, solid guy. There are too many tackles who are similar to him, and he's not a gamechanger, IMO. Peppers was a guy who could take over games, so if we're going to take a DT 1 overall? Lets make sure he's dynamic. Not just solid, and safe.

If we're going to shy away from Newton, lets take someone dynamic. Peterson, Green...I think both of them, especially Green, has FAR less downside than Darius.

I think I did, on several occasions, as relating to the #1 overall pick. Go read again.

Dareus just seems solid to me. Ive watched some on him, and Im not going to pretend I all went scout on his ass and ordered a bunch of gametapes, but for the #1 overall pick, I made it clear what I want.

The same group wanted Henderson at #2, and I thought that was bullshit then, too. I think Dareus at #1 is bullshit now.

    I want a gamechanger at #1. I don't think Dareus is.

Why dont you 'splain why Dareus is a better choice than Green, Newton or Peterson, other than saying he's safe, and we need DT, because we need a CB and QB too pretty fuckin' bad.

    We're at #1 overall.

Yeah, this guy is total hype. No substance to him at all. Look at what Vick did when he was drafted. All the guy did was suck, and his teams never went to the playoffs, and he was a one read guy too.

Newton clearly stinks, and he played in a weak conference, too! Everywhere he has gone, he has fucked the coup. Has this guy ever won ANYthing of note???

Jon Gruden can't stand him, either. xD

your vick comparison is probably prophetic. We shall see down the road what kind of person the guy is. He's a gamble both on the field and off

mmqb - cam's former OC now head coach from blinn.

One thing he wasn't was phony, said Feldman, who's livid about the impression that Newton's a fake. "I heard somebody on the radio the other day talk about his fake smile and how he's not genuine. That guy is full of s--- with a capital 'S.' He doesn't know Cam!
"I was with him day after day, side by side, for a year," added Feldman, now Blinn's head coach. "I can't say enough good things about him. He's a yes-sir, no-sir kid, 100 percent trustworthy, with a strong passion to compete at anything. What a strong, strong leader.
"The first day here [in the offseason] they were all lifting, going after it hard. When it was over, they all thought it was done. But Cam, who doesn't even know these guys yet, says, 'I'm gonna be out there throwing if anyone wants to come.' Five or six go out. The next day, 10 or 15 are out with him. He comes in and says to me, 'Coach, you got five or six pass plays from our playbook you could draw up? We're going out there and we want to run some of our plays.' I said, "Wooooooo.' Then, later in the week, I see him out there running the stadium stairs, and a couple days later, he's got a bunch of guys out there with him. A natural leader, a strong, strong leader. Charismatic.

I think you try to take your highest rated player, always, once your team is on the clock.

Dareus is a force, and would serve Rivera well. I won't be sad if that happens, just as I won't go running down Mint Street with a pitchfork if they pick Newton.

My amateur BPA board looks something like this:

    1. Netwon
    2. Peterson
    3. Dareus
    4. Green
    5. Miller

When I look at that list, which is a subjective list (as they all are), I look at which one best serves my team's needs, not just for 2011, but for the next 5-7 years.

And, then, you get into the other side of the coin, which is "need". For me, the BPA and Need are in alignment. Not without internal debate, but in the end, they line up.

Newton's a special athlete, a winner, a leader and has a strong arm, one that many scouts say transfers well in terms of accuracy in the NFL, as well. I had to do my own homework on his character concerns. Stuff happened, and it wasn't small stuff. So, there's risk there.

I do think his ability to play the position, move the chains and keep the defense off the field in the long-term overshadow what he and his daddy have done in the past, off the field.

My goal is not to change anyone's mind about whom they want at #1. It's by no means a "no-brainer" this year. But, again, I personally feel that he's the best athlete, most impactful player and best positional fit for this team, particularly with the inability to make trades or sign FA's.

    Read it earlier.

Agendas are all around this kid. I don't think guys like Whitfield or Moon are the best source of information, but when you drill down deeper to the JUCO/HS level, and begin to read what consistent, non-sensationalist writers have to say about him, you (at least I) begin to worry less about his character.

Can he learn the offense? Will be be a film rat? Does he have the patience to avoid a Vince Young meltdown? Nobody knows nothin', at this point, regarding these long-range factors.

It's a gamble. You take him, knowing he has the physical tools to be a great player at the position, with the understanding that he might not. If he fails, IMO, it will be directly tied to reads and patience, not laptops and his dad.

QB's that can extend the play, at any level, are pests for opposing defenses. That's one of many elements he must master, but it's also the one element that he already has.

Last thing: the NFL is a different animal than, say, 10 years ago. If you draft Newton, and he plays 2 years with poor results, you simply move on to the next option. Hell, Atlanta had to pull out of hell, and they ended up putting together a great team. If you draft Dareus, and Newton goes on to be a top-10 QB in the league for the next decade, there's regret. If you draft Newton, and Dareus goes on to be Warren Sapp for the next decade, there's regret. Of the two, only one touches the football every time they step on the field. That's a factor, at least for me.

    Me too.

And all this said - I'm not opposed to trading down and getting more picks, and grabbing a qb either later in round one or in later rounds. I just don't believe we'll have any kind of suitor.

And while I'm not one to make 'predictions', I feel I can STATE the following without risk:

Newton will be an immediate, day one upgrade to our current roster of quarterbacks - on the field, in the huddle, in the locker room.
