    * Blaine Gabbert, QB, MissouriThere's a thought process here that goes beyond need. For one, Gabbert impressed in Indy, and his pro day next week will help determine if he has the potential to land here. Two, I expect any labor deal that gets worked out will create a rookie salary scale that limits the massive bonuses for top picks, making it easier to trade up and down in the draft, which has become increasingly difficult. So it makes sense for Carolina to project that it could take one of the top quarterbacks and open up the trade options, in essence, saying, "To guarantee a shot at the one you prefer, talk to us." Lastly, while I still believe in Jimmy Clausen's chances given his youth, Ron Rivera could not be blamed for targeting his own vision of a franchise quarterback with a pick here or via free agency. It's a leverage position now, but also a potential pick. Part of it is up to Gabbert.

Can we just get to the point where "Collin says he sucks" is enough?

Don Banks thinks Gabbert goes #1, too:

I've watched more tape on Gabbert, and the thing that troubles me the most is his horrid pocket presence. He's skittish, moves his feet too much, doesn't let the play develop, thinks too quickly of escape. Do that at the next level and you get killed.

If the Panthers choose a QB #1 overall, they'll do it to for the purpose of a trade. It makes no sense to do otherwise at this point. I do like him as a player, and one I think could be the best QB out of this class. But he's not franchise-worthy, in my opinion.

I'd be cool if we took Gabbert at #1
I'd be pissed if we took Newton at #1

Watched Missouri play several times while Gabbert was the QB and I never thought anyone would ever mention him as being good enough to be the first player taken. I guess the QB crop this year is so mediocre they have to make a case for someone being THE QB just to have some drama. Mallet is the best QB of the bunch but being a head case makes him hard to take with the 1st. They should just bite the bullet and take Dareus or Fairley if they can't trade down.
