I am kind of torn on this one. Obviously, there is no way that I would want to sign a 31 year old to a 10 year - $300 million contract because I know that I am going to be eating the last 2-4 years of it. Adding in the fact that the Cards can't support eating that much, I can understand that they hold that line.

On the other hand, the guy is the best player in baseball and has been for a while, so it's not like he is out of line to ask for the highest salary. And apparently St. Louis has done pretty much NOTHING over the past 2-3 years to address this upcoming date.

It just seems that they relied a lot too much on getting the hometown discount.

The pressure is now on him to continue to play at the same high level until September. Barring injury or an unusually bad season, he's going get his huge contract. The sweepstakes for his services will be a huge story next off-season. Can you imagine what kind of money will be thrown at him next year?

signing matt holliday for seven years and 120 mill didn't help matters. How many of those type contracts can the cards give, one, maybe two? If they don't pay Pujols, they basically decided a year ago that Holliday is their franchise player.
