True, right now, but the author's an idiot to suggest "State will never be a UNC or Duke in basketball". State had every bit the tradition of UNC (and better then Duke) up until the 80's.
College hoops is ALL about coaching. UNC has been blessed with Dean forever, then landing Roy. (What happened with Gut and MattD ?). Duke wasn't relevant until K. Once he's gone ???
During that same time frame, State has had Les Robinson, Herb, and Sidney.
The author showed what a moron he was when he started the whole "shouldn't have fired Herb" argument. Obviously he never watched a Herb game in his life.
Sid didn't work out, time to try again.

    Welcome, NC
David Thompson - maybe he could energize the players. I heard he used to could find some good stuff to give you a 2 hour lift.

Seriously though, as an ABC'er I'd like to see Wake and State get somebody decent in there. Also Georgia Tech. The rest of the ACC I don't care much about.

State just needs to go out and find a young coach on an up and coming team. He doesn't need to have previous State ties (never understood the importance some schools place on this). He just needs to be able to recruit, and have the balls to go against Roy and K 4 times a year. (something Calapussy didn't have...)

Duke's run under Bubas in the '60's is as impressive as nearly any in the history of the league. 3 Final Fours in his 10 years back in the one team per conference era. Probably the only run that tops it is Dean's 3 consecutive Final Fours at the end of the 60's.

State dominated the league back in the day when Football was still king in the south. It wasn't until McGuire came to Chapel Hill and Bubas came to Durham, that basketball rose to prominence.

Other than the run under Sloan with the greatest ACC player ever, Thompson, and a Cinderella story with Valvano, I'd be hard pressed to say State had a better tradition, even pre-'85, than Duke.

Yeah, I still think Chapel Hill and Duke has NC State beat on the whole tradition thing. I don't even like either of the first two and will pull for State when it plays the first two. But, as far as Gut, didn't he go to the Final Four one year and all Matt D did was recruit a national championship team.

    Two in a row,
    the fire is lit.
    If you don't got Lowe,
    you don't got shit.
On Harrow, on Leslie, on Smith and Brown,
soon Raleigh will be known as "Title Town".
