Trade Wallace and a lottery protected 1st for a 14.5 million dollar trade exception?

The Charlotte Bobcats have discussed a trade to send forward Gerald Wallace(notes) to the Cleveland Cavaliers, a league source told Yahoo! Sports.

The Cavaliers would use their trade exception to acquire Wallace, but have also pushed for a lottery-protected first-round pick for them to take on the two years and $22 million left on Wallace’s contract through the 2012-13 season, the source said. The Bobcats would receive a $10 million trade exception in return.

More From Adrian WojnarowskiNo ’Melo, just more drama for Nets Jan 20, 2011 Prokhorov ends Nets' pursuit of Anthony Jan 19, 2011 No deal is imminent, and the Cavaliers have until July 10 to use the $14.5 million trade exception created from the sign-and-trade with the Miami Heat for LeBron James(notes). If the NBA and Players Association haven’t reached a new collective bargaining agreement by the end of June, the Cavs would run the risk of having the trade exception expire during the lockout.

The Cavs also have expressed interest in using their exception on Philadelphia 76ers forward Andre Iguodala(notes). Iguodala has three years and $44 million left on his contract after this season.

One potential problem for the Cavs: Sources familiar with the thinking of Wallace and Iguodala said the players do not want to join a team in the throes of a massive rebuilding project. Cleveland officials would likely have to weigh those sentiments when deciding whether to proceed forward in negotiations.

The Cavaliers are in freefall, with an 11-game losing streak and an NBA-worst 8-30 record. They have had numerous discussions about absorbing a player into the exception, but are strongly considering the proposed Wallace deal.

The Bobcats have been shopping Wallace for several weeks and discussed packaging him in deals to several teams. Charlotte has struggled to a 15-21 record, and replaced Larry Brown with interim coach Paul Silas last month. Facing significant financial losses this season, Bobcats owner Michael Jordan has targeted his highest-paid player as a way to trim payroll.

Wallace’s performance has sagged this season; he’s averaging 16.4 points and 8.1 rebounds. Still, Charlotte has won four straight games, including a victory over the Chicago Bulls on Wednesday, and holds the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Yeah they are really pushing for people to renew their season tickets. Between this and the upcoming lockout I'm wondering why I would rush to do anything.

I can't remember which one, but one of the beat writers for the Bobcats said that this deal was actually Wallace for the Cavs first round pick and the trade exception. Not quite as bad, but still not worth doing.

no way in hell the cavs give up a pick and their trade exemption for wallace. unless they're criminally stupid.

really, i don't see how the bobcats dumping wallace gets them anything beyond upset fans.

Looking at how the Lebron James saga went down, I'd say they're walking a pretty fine line towards being criminally stupid. As I dug around a little bit looking for which guy actually said it, I found an article saying they'd made the same offer to Philly for Iguadala.

But yeah, doing this deal wouldn't help them in any real way other than in Jordan's wallet.

oh i dunno about that. i've been following the cavs for years and i lay it all at the feet of lebron james. dude wouldn't commit which made landing free agents incredibly difficult for the cavs. lebron famously signed a short extension which signalled to the league that he wasn't committed to the cavs. they were at his mercy and the only way they could hope to keep him would be to do everything he asked for. they pretty much did and he still walked.

the only thing they could have done differently would have been to trade him. but how do you trade lebron james? how on earth do you get adequate compensation? who would sign him without a guarantee that he'd sign an exension (like mello is pretty much untradable right now unless you're the knicks).

miami's winning formula to land lebron was to get rid of every good player they had to make salary space for three superstars. so the cavs put together the best team in the league (record-wise) for two straight years while miami trashed their team and put the whole franchise on wade's shoulders. wade rewards them by recruiting lebron and bosh. lebron rewards the cavs by failing to recruit anybody for the cavs (which reads as a "don't sign here").

    f lebron.

bosh is not a superstar. If I hear "the big three anymore" I'm going to fucking puke. Those three are closer "the big two." Wade is the most overrated , referee-aided "star" in the league. LB is a stud, no matter how big of a douche he seems to be.

yeah, i agree with you. bosh is definitely a step down from lebron and wade and really, wade does rely on the refs to get his. also, he's not going to have a long career the way he plays.

still, they all make the same $$. bosh ain't a hall of famer, but he commands top dollar.

    UPDATE from ESPN Insider:
UPDATE: Updating this below report from Jan. 14, Jason Lloyd of the Akron Beacon Journal is reporting such a deal is unlikely to come to fruition.

"The Bobcats are indeed interested in moving Wallace's contract, but they wanted a first-round pick from the Cavaliers in return, according to a league source," he wrote. "That's not happening. The Cavs are trying to acquire first-round picks, not trade them away ? and certainly not on a 10-year veteran like Wallace."

Of course, it's possible the Bobcats' asking price could change or that another team could be willing to give up a first-round pick for Wallace by the trade deadline.

    -- Ryan Corazza

    ---

Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports reports the Cleveland Cavaliers have talked to the Charlotte Bobcats about small forward Gerald Wallace. According to Wojnarowski, Cleveland would use the $14.5 million trade exception from LeBron James to acquire the small forward.

Wallace has two years and a guaranteed $19 million remaining on his contract, so the Cavaliers may ask for a lottery-protected first round pick since they would be taking on that contract.

The Bobcats have been shopping Wallace for some time, however, no deal is imminent. Trading Wallace may be difficult due to his propensity to get hurt.

Wallace just returned to the active roster after missing four games with a left ankle injury.

The final season of Wallace's deal in 2012-13 is a player option.

I for one think the Bobcats should send Wallace packing with the quickness. He's 28, but been playing NBA ball since 19. He plays an above the rim style, and he's not going to ever get any higher above the rim than he did two years ago. He's affordable, a good defensive player, and doesn't command the ball, so he's a good chip for a team that actually has a chance to do something (get out of the 1st round). If we keep him here, what do we get?. A guy that can do everything well, but not anything great, and is likely to be on the downslide earlier in his career than most because of mileage and style of play. Not a pure shooter, and a guy that relies on penetration to get his. Get what you can, don't wait until its too late. This team is ok at best, 7 or 8 seed is doable with him off the team anyway, and really, who cares about being Boston or Miami's whipping post come 1st round.
