Wasn't Dez there at 17? Still...we'd had a more desperate need at DE....

At least they didn't trade next year's #1. I will miss that #2 though. Brown may turn out to be a more than decent DE but really, if we had kept our #1 wouldn't we have had a chance at a better DE this year? Hindsight is 20-20 but I hate dealing picks away in the first 3 rounds.

Maybe. I'm assuming that means using #17 to pick a DE.

Four came off the board before our missing pick. Cal's Tyson Alualu went to the Jags at 10. That is way too far to trade up. Not sure what it would have cost but we would be bitching about it next year for sure. And he might actually be a DT.

Then at 13, 15 & 16 right before us Brandon Graham from Michigan went to the Eagles, South Florida's Jason Pierre-Paul went to the Giants and Georgia Tech's Derrick Morgan to the Titans. Graham is stout but doesn't have the elite speed that we seem to want. Pierre-Paul is raw and needs to add bulk. Sounds like Brown from a year ago. Except now Brown has a year of some experience and coaching plus he has added bulk over the off season. Plus his initials are PeePee. Derrick Morgan would have been a nice pickup. A very nice pick up. P-P and Morgan are underclassmen but are Great Blue North's top DEs with Graham at #3.

But they were taken ahead of us. No problem, we just trade up a spot or two and we have our DE. But DE was a top need for Tennessee. If they thought we were sitting right behind them looking at DE who's to say they wouldn't have moved up a spot or two to stay in the running for a top DE.

So arguably the top 4 would have been gone when we picked at 17.

The first one taken after our pick at 17 was TCU's Jerry Hughes at #31 by the Colts. Then Koa Misi at 40 from Utah by the Dolphins and Sergio Kindle at 43 from Texas by the Ravens. Hughes, Misi and Kindle are all listed by GBN as OLB's for whatever that is worth. Misi was #67 on GBN's Top 100 and would have been a huge reach at 17. Hughes was # 41 and we would have probably thought it a reach. Kindle was #22 so that wouldn't have been an issue.

The next two on GBN's DE rankings are Everson Griffin (31/GBN Top 100) from USC and Carlos Dunlap (39/100) from Florida. Both are underclassmen. Both were still on the board at 48 with Dunlap going at 54 to the Bengals. He is said to have severe motivational issues. Griffin lasted all the way to 100 when the Vikings took him. Next on GBN's DE list are Corey Wootton from Northwestern (66/100) taken at 109 by the Bears. Alex Carrington (84/100) from arkansas State taken at 72 by the Bills. Jermaine Cunningham (87/100) from Florida taken at 53 by the Pats. All of them we still available to us at 48 but we chose to go QB.

Allegedly we considered Brown as first round value last year. He was needed as insurance against Peepers not being here last year. He now has a years experience, maturity, familiararity and growth that most of this years batch would have needed anyways. Couple that with us getting Hardy who was #98 on GBN's Top 100 and #9 on GBN's DE list and I don't see how we end up in better shape than what we are in. The only legitimate options were MAYBE Derrick Morgan and Jerry Hughes. Morgan was already gone and Hughes I don't see as an upgrade over Brown.

assuming we picked a DE at 17, he'd be a rookie this year... instead we have Brown with a year experience... plus he's had a year to get bigger
