Shin splints

    Started happening within the past couple of years while running.

    I cannot run more than half a mile without pain starting around my shins. The pain is more to the outside of my shin than inside.

    I have always worn the same type of shoe (Asic Kayanos) for the past 6 years for running. I did have IBT issues and knee issues last year but not sure that has any effect with my shin split issue now.

    I've been stretching and working out my calf muscles more.


    Anyone else here had shin splints before and what have you done?

    I ran two marathons with them...it's not fun. You're on the right track with the stretching. Since these are on the outside of your leg, make sure you are working those muscles too. You can do toe raises. Ice Massage seems to work better than traditional icing. Just take a paper cup and fill it about 3/4 full of water and freeze it. Then peel the paper down and rub the ice directly on the painful area.

    Mine seemed to get better after a couple of miles, so i would use Flexall or something like that to help with the initial pain.
