We got enough young wide receivers already. Our problem is finding someone that can get the ball to them.

 

We ain't gonna fill that hole through this draft.

 

Are you looking for a board where everyone agrees with you? I can make a strong case for drafting AJ Green.
1. He makes average QBs look good. tall, fast, and great hands. A threat every time he touches it.
2. Smith is 32. Relies on his speed. How much longer?
3. Gettis and Lafell are complimentary WRs, but neither can handle the top cbs.
4. JR said we are going to start scoring points, opening things up.
5. AJ is the Andrew Luck of his position. Best since Calvin J and Larry F.

I can also make arguments for drafting Peterson. The Woodson of the draft.

I can argue that Bowers is the missing ingredient to give our D the ends a 4-3 needs to succeed.

I could argue that Defensive Tackles, our biggest need, are not worth the top pick.

I could argue that we should trade down and take a QB.

I could argue that all of the top QBs in this draft will bust. All of them.

Green would set us at WR for the next decade. He would make everyone better. He has Fitzgeraldish qualities.

 

I have two problems with this statement. First, a great QB makes average WRs look great (see Brady, Tom). The inverse is not true. Smith is still a top WR and he cant make Pickle look good (or less moronic), and Fitz hasnt looked great this year.

Second, all that aside, it takes 2-3 years for a WR to develop. We dont yet know what we have in the 3 WRs that were drafted last year.

If you want immeadiate impact then Fairly should be the pick, DTs have a much smaller learning curve than even DEs. Im torn as to where to go with the pick if they cant trade down. I dont think that Green is the best way to go if you stay at #1. Hopefully we see something tomorrow that shows Newton can be a pro-style QB because I love the atleticism that he would bring to the team. But as of right now I think Fairly is the best pick we could make because he can step right in, at an area I think we all can agree is a glaring weakness. Middle pressure would be nice to see for a change, instead of opposing QBs having all day in the pocket, making our Dbs and Safetys better in the process.

 

I can also make a strong case for bringing in a vet QB and giving Clausen and Pike a fair chance. There is no way any QB in history would have succeeded here under these conditions. Lame duck coach, scrub offensive line, rookie WRs, stupid OC, veteran purging, starting before he was ready, a system not designed to come from behind forced to constantly come from behind, etc, etc. A few of these conditions cause other QBs to bust. Defenses pinned their ears back every play. Double smith, cover the #2, and blitz like crazy.

Clausen was an average rookie QB when he had time. He will never be great, but he is not to be tossed out. A new system, more offensive weapons, a healthy line= a better QB. We need a veteran to give us a year or two, but Clausen is not done. Everyone is overreacting. He may not have it, but don't you want to fix the problems and give him a chance to develop properly?

By the way, do people really think the answer to the qb problem is going to be resolved in the draft? Didn't you dismiss Green as a WR because we had 3 rookies this year and they need to develop, but you want to bring in a rookie QB when we have 2 this year? All of the QBs in this draft have major areas that are questionable. Cam's ability to read a Defense and his character concerns and work ethic. Mallett has a SLOW release and doesn't read defenses well. Locker has the tools, but is inaccurate and has sucked this year. Gabbert is supposedly lazy and was unspectacular in college. We need to address QB in the draft? Nope. If you cant upgrade the QB spot, upgrade everything around the QB.

 

I really want to trade down and believe we can if we make someone a deal.

 

definitely better information. If your concern is whether people will always agree with you, that's going to be a tough sell.

I know we need DT, and I have griped about not addressing positions that require 2-3 years to develop. However, you are not giving Pickles the same learning curve. He is emersed in a horrible situation, fails, and he is a moron. Maybe he is, but how could you tell from this season.

The misconception is this: if players take 2-3 years to develop, why are you drafting for 2011? I realize we need dts, but we have a chance to take a WR who is rated as high as Larry Fitzgerald. Fairley and Dareus are very good, but DT is deep and we need instant starters. Free agency, not the draft. I would take one in the draft, but later. It is deep. You build with the first pick, grab the player who will be a pro bowler for 10 years, you don't fill your roster's biggest need as your top factor. I hear you and appreciate your passion, but our philosophies are different. ANd I think better weapons make the soldier better, so WRs do make QBs better. Terry Bradshaw, for example.
