"returned 20 of 22 starters from '08, finished 8-8 in '09, could have fired Fox then but he chose not to" JR

If that is what fired Fox then why did it not fire Hurney?

Only saw the edited version on Panthers.com. They took an awful lot out based on what I've read. Nothing bad there, but Jerry's speech is awfully slurred. Wonder if he's had a stroke?

The demon heart sometimes causes him to slur.

Because Richardson thinks emotionally instead of analytically. Remember when he made such a big deal about how Gross was a leader, then politely made the point that Peppers isn't? Afterward, we made Jordan the second highest paid offensive tackle despite the fact that he had already given up eight sacks before he got hurt, tying him for most in the league at that point with two Packers. Or think back to when Richardson pushed Capers to make that horrid deal for Sean Gilbert because Jerry thought we were close to a Super Bowl. More than anything else, the Panthers need a strong general manager with an intellect like Belichick who will make decisions based on dispassionate analysis rather than feelings and impressions.

Good lord, just look at the mess Hurney has made. In recent years, we've traded future picks more often than any other organization, meanwhile the Patriots have acquired then more often than any other organization. One screams desperation while the other says calculation. And how did we get absolutely nothing in return for Julius Peppers? NOTHING. What other team hasn't received anything for a guy of that stature? At least franchise him again to trade him for a 2nd or 3rd. Then look at the contracts. We gave Jake Delhomme the biggest contract a 35+ year old player had ever received, just months after the worst playoff performance in NFL history. Or think back to all the huge contracts we've paid to mediocre players besides Gross, such as Wharton, Gamble, Wahle, Lucas, etc. Now I'm worried that we're going to do the same with Kalil (who is probably better than mediocre on the right team, but not a great fit for this offense), and then get nothing for DeAngelo.

I started to sour on hurney when he came on fnz for interviews defending the decision to pay and not bench delhomme last year and defending his roster and the decision to have no vet qb this year.

hurney seems like he's in over his head. There is also likely much more to the story than we know, so hard to draw a conclusion.

The peppers and delhomme situations were both just terrible, and ultimately could be traced as the beginning of things getting very bad.
